Gee, going back to proofread some of that I said, I think this post should count for at least 3 postings
Sorry it's so long but I think most of it needs to be said in order to know what I'm asking. Thanks again!
I did search using a number of ways to key in but couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for and I don't think one answer *unless it is to blow the sucker up" counts as one
Ok, so long story short (those of you who heard from me in my welcome thread will recall how voracious I am - sorry - in my genes or something) I had bought my kid an RC car that ended up not working - one of those FABULOUS Christmas items that your BOYS, young and old alike, will LOVE. Well obviously it wasn't "loved" and since I had intro'd him to cubing (all his cubes are from his mother - gonna have a chat with him about that ) I decided to have him give me a list of the cubes he wanted from Amazon and I'd get IT for him (surprised him and got him 2) One of them was the Shengshou Megaminx.
After about 15 hrs of off and on working on it, he finally solved it - pretty impressive for a 32 yo but he used to be an electrical engineer so I shouldn't be surprised. So he let me borrow that while he took one of my 4x4x4s (refused to give him the beaded one - that one would have drove him nuts trying to work it. Why in the WORLD are they charging almost $20 for a cube that is worse than my $1.32 ripoff I got stuck with I don't know but I wanted to check that out as a 4x4 and since that was the most expensive cube I'd purchased I was looking forward to getting it - yah, right - I bring it out once in a while to remember what frustration is and then after either solving it or getting parity and saying phooey on it I go to his Megaminx that I borrowed.
Now in my intro I announced that I'm partially disabled and I have a hard time with feeling things with my finger tip and hanging on to faces on the Shengshou - so I decided to buy my own and settled on the QJ Megaminx with the raised tiles (sucky glue job - good thing I have gorilla glue). After gluing the pieces back on and letting it dry - I start messing with it. Not too bad but I have some faces that seem to move like there's a silk lining between the layers and then I have some that come straight from cube hell! So, I did what any noob would do - I got on youtube, looked up how to take the thing about and put it back together again and did that. Now, to be honest I didn't do it on purpose. The corner cutting was so bad in spots (while in others it was great) that a piece fell out. And since I've yet to solve it (my son is ecstatic of course - I remember him he's 32, I'm 52 so shut up - I can do a lot of F2L and he gave up because it made him "slow" - well DUH, you're learning stuff!!) i wasn't sure where to put the piece in and I decided I'd get to where I could with it and if I couldn't work it (like a parity) it had been put in backward and by then I wouldn't even remember which it was.
Soooooo, as I tried to smoosh the edge piece back in, hopefully correct, the whole THING EXPLODED in my hands!! I had edges and corners all OVER the place. Some tiles fell off, some endcaps came off - you name it, it happened. So I figured that as long as it was open anyway, I'd take the screws out 1 at a time cuz I don't know the color scheme yet as I just got it on Wednesday, lubed the core screws with Traxxas Diff lube (50k weight) sanded any mold pieces left behind and put it back together. It helped some but I still had a hard time getting the faces to turn without catching on something - so I went to Stefan Pochmann's website and he told me on how to mod and possibly slow the popping of the cubes. So back inside I went, sanding everything that looked like it needed smoothed and noticed that the screws were at different tensions and that some screws I could turn all the way down tight but others would go tight but there was still springiness to the center.
Once I tightened them all the way down, I backed them off a whole half turn for a start cuz some of the faces were actually moving rather nicely so I figured I'd start there and go back or forth, whichever I needed.
Now, all that and we get to the meat and potatoes of the topic.
90% of the cube feels AWESOME - the corners cut decently enough for my use which I need cuz if I had to sit and precisely position the faces where I need to turn, I end up forgetting where I was in the alg and, as I said, I don't know my cube well enough yet to look and start over (plus I'm not that good at that stuff anyway - brain damage issues) so I usually end up messing up bad enough that i get frustrated, re-scramble and then start again.
So now the other 10% - even if the face "seems" positioned properly I sometimes can't get that sucker to turn that way for nothing. It'll turn the opposite direction most of the time but it will not go through it - and sometimes, I can't go either way - I have a "break" through whatever is catching. I'll look as I'm trying to get it to turn looking for whatever is catching it but I can't see anything - tiles aren't misaligned enough to catch the pieces so I'm confused.
What should I look for? Should I get new screws and springs (I mean, these things feel like they're different sizes, tensions, etc!!) and if so, where? But generally I just want to know if anyone has had this problem (dumb comment I know) and what was done to correct it.
Thanks for any help, and sorry for running off at the mouth - home alone all day with just the dog until hubby gets home makes me run off at the mouth a lot
Ok, enough of the chit-chat. On to the question/problem/whatever.
