GAN has been a really strong force in the cube market,
but what are some of its major issues?

Major Issues With GAN Speedcubes

1.

GAN was one of the last major brands to adopt adjustable magnet systems, and even now, several of their cubes still don’t offer it. This frustrates cubers because:

  • You’re locked into GAN’s chosen magnet strength
  • Competing cubes (Tornado V3, WRM V10, etc.) offer full adjustability
  • It limits fine‑tuning for different turning styles
For a premium brand, the lack of magnet control feels outdated.

2.

A classic GAN complaint: their cubes often feel too light and airy, which some people interpret as a lack of control.

Typical symptoms:

  • Significant overshooting of turns
  • Slippery, unstable feel on fast solves
  • Harder to maintain accuracy compared to MoYu or QiYi
This is especially noticeable on looser tensions or with weaker magnets.

3.

This one has been a hot topic. Despite being flagship cubes, many users report:

  • A dry, papery, scratchy sound
  • A feel that isn’t as premium as the price suggests
  • A mismatch between marketing (“buttery smooth”) and reality
Some people fix it with lube, but others say the scratchiness is baked into the piece's design.

4.

The GAN 14 in particular has a reputation for:

  • Random pops
  • Corner catches
  • Stability issues on aggressive turning
This is surprising for a flagship cube and has been one of the biggest criticisms of the model.

5.

GAN’s tensioning system is unique, but it comes with drawbacks:

  • Easy to mis‑set (except on GAN 16)
  • Hard to get consistent across all six sides
  • Center caps sometimes lift or shift
  • If the GES nut isn’t fully locked, the cube can literally fall apart
It’s a lot of engineering for something that should be simple.

6.

This is the elephant in the room.

  • GAN cubes often cost 2–3× more than competitors
  • Performance doesn’t always justify the price
  • Many cubers feel they’re paying for branding and packaging
When a $25 cube outperforms an $80 cube, people notice.

7.

Not every GAN cube has issues, but enough do that it’s a pattern:

  • Uneven tensions out of the box
  • Loose magnets
  • Variability between units
  • Some cubes feel amazing, others feel mediocre
For a premium brand, consistency matters.
