I still use a 25th anniversary cube. I'm not the greatest, but after breaking it in, it turns great. I still switch to my stiffest cube if I am having a bad day cubing just so I remember to look ahead.

yes, but i was just pointing out that a stiff cube will ruin his smooothness.
Storebought cubes do not have screws, but rivets, which are like nails. So prying off the center caps will do you no good.I am using my storebought, and for my ability, it is fine. It does have some problems though...
1) The centercaps DO NOT COME OFF (spent 2 hours with various tools from a kitchen knife to various pliers...)
2)Since the centercaps cannot come off, the spring tension cannot be adjusted. So my cube is so tight it is extremely difficult to take apart.
I got my first DIY when I got to the 45 second barrier and couldn't break it for weeks. The DIY definitely helped But I still had to work some more.
I somewhat agree with pcharles93 that you really don't need a DIY until you are sub-50 (I realize that this is a bit early as well) But I still think that pcharles93 was a bit harsh.
