No, just no. Being able to solve doesn't mean you should get a DIY. And with a pb of 3 minutes, there isn't much speed. There aren't many benefits you can reap from owning a DIY. You probably never use fingertricks. That would pretty much make the adjustability feature useless. You probably never pop on a storebought. Once again, the adjustability is of no use. I don't see why people rush out and buy a DIY when they don't even need it. The "Omg, I need better times. Must buy DIY's. They magically decrease times" mentality is getting really annoying now.

No! you got it all wrong!i use finger tricks but they dont work at all ! becuse my cube jams and pops all the time! im just asking if its a good DIY i dont want to be critizized on how bad my time is to solve it. and also ive been cubing for about a month now i just want to know if the cube i got is a P.O.S. or a good cube. becuse its hard to practice on somthing that cant even turn right.

I still use my store bought and I have only one sub-20 average. I've only popped it twice while solving during my entire career. I probably need a DIY more than you (a lot more) but then I do 2x2 and 4x4 more. I don't see a "DIY" for 2x2.

Probably. I don't see how it's a wrong choice :P..

anyway, I'm sure if you lube your storebought it'll be great. Seriously. My storebought i use now for my cubing was all gummy and I had to wrist it all the time the first few days. Then I got bored trying to break it in and lubed it and it's great now.. so Yeah....

Lube is the key to a lot of things.

Is it you or the cube that needs help? If you use fingertricks and you claim it's your cube that's keeping you from breaking the 3 minute barrier(which shouldn't be called a barrier at all) then I wonder what your fingertricks look like. Are they rushed and spasmatic or are they smooth and flowing, but still maintain high tps? I'm 100% sure it's the former. If that's true, then you need to work on your cubing. And about the jamming and popping, that's all you. Work on your turning accuracy.

I got my first DIY when I got to the 45 second barrier and couldn't break it for weeks. The DIY definitely helped But I still had to work some more.
I somewhat agree with pcharles93 that you really don't need a DIY until you are sub-50 (I realize that this is a bit early as well) But I still think that pcharles93 was a bit harsh.

Sheesh. You're going on as if it's the end of the world that he's got a nice cube.

Going from store bought to DIY shaved about 6 seconds off my times in a week (granted, i was still a total n00b, but hey, who cares).

Any A, or D DIY should be good for a beginner. Why struggle on a crap cube if you can use a good cube?

My first DIY was a Type A, but that was the first Type A. Now i use a white Type D which is great.

Dude, you have a nice cube now. Now just practice. At 1 month in you should be going much faster than 3 minutes, but that also depends on how you practice. Good luck!

you should get a DIY cube when you average sub 1 at least, till then, i'd go with storeboughts.

I'm interested in how your cube turns. Could you provide a video with examples of your jamming and popping and your finger tricks?

And about the argument, I think anyone can use a DIY. They are generally better than storeboughts, and require less breaking than storeboughts. Beginner's don't know much (no offense) about maintaining the cube so DIYs are a good choice for them.

Yes, it's a good choice. But I think I read of some criticisms about the corner and edge pieces. Clicking or something?

DIY = Generally easier to use.
You've probably done the right thing in getting a DIY. Cheap cubes and store bought cubes with crap stickers have turned a few friends off cubing. I've found that they lockup too much and stickers are kind of essential. So now I build up some DIYs for them.

Store bought cubes aren't all that bad...
Having said that, I get sub 30 on store bought cubes. You just need to sand and lube them. Some DIYs are a pain to configure correctly, moreso than a store bought cube.

Practice practice practice!
People have already criticized your times, as though you're not deserving to hold a DIY. That's not very friendly, and extremely arrogant (although, they might have taken the comment you made about your cube as a personal insult). You just need to practice. Looking back at my first cheap Famwealth cube, I wish I'd started out on a DIY. Finger tricks are easier* on DIYs, and that's an area that you don't want to be worrying about during a solve.
*my store bought cube still locks up less than my Old Type A, especially noticeable during T perm.

Happy cubing!
Tim.

I broke 2/3min.!!!! it toke me allllll day to do it and i had to use my best friends modded cube but any way i didit my time was 1.57! i know it sounds rly fricking noobish but still !!!! Any way thanks tim and Dae for kinda being the only ones helping with how good my diy i got was but any way this is all ive been doing was just solving and solving my cube but any thanks !

was the storebought a dollar cube or a real ten dollar waste of money cube? Because the waste of money cubes can get really good and smooth. I use mine for OH and I can get about the same times as usual while using my brother's cube. So as long as your cube isn't a dollar cube, then you don't really need a DIY... ever... unless you like the feel of DIYs better (which most people do)

Indeed. There is too much criticism on this forum at times.

Chill.

I'm sure Odin realizes that a DIY will not get him sub-1 as soon as he puts it together.

Like the other level-headed people who have responded decently to your question, I agree. Your new cube will be fine.

I, too, have a store bought that I love. It's my best cube of the lot. BUT - that doesn't mean to say that your store bought doesn't suck. The variation among them is tremendous. So I (nor anyone else) can truly tell the deficiencies of your cube but you.

But it is good to keep your judgment in check by realizing what's out there and considering everyone's opinion - no matter how arrogant or unfriendly - they provide information which you'll benefit from regardless.

At any rate, welcome to speedcubing.

Be excited. Get pumped. And be ready to (slowly, but surely) get faster.

wow ppl r mean on this thread lol

it will definitely be better than your storebought, but its not like you will magically get sub 20s. you might get 5-10 seconds faster. as you get better, the time gap between stores and diys will get bigger

practice practice practice

I don't know why people tell newbies to wait until their a certain time to get a speed cube. Using a crappy storebought (bla bla bla I know they can be good) won't make your times go down any faster than just buying a good cube. There is literally no point AT ALL to wait to get a good cube.
