Jorian Meeuse's progression thread (Kinch WR230 ER70 NR4)

I figured out what I did wrong: I calculated the 4th number in the wrong direction. I can now do 7simul solves, but I am still far from being able to do simultaneous turns and everything (+ I still use a cheat sheet for how memo works lol). I like the idea of the method though, so I guess I kinda like clock now?
How did you learn 7-Simul?
And can you give a quick overview of it?

I might learn 7-Simul or Sheerin

good luck on clock! any goals? Good luck at uni btw ;)

I watched tommy's tutorial on it. It's a pretty simple concept:
You start memo on a side, this side has clocks denoted by a lower-case letter. The other side has clocks denoted by an upper-case letter. Notation of clocks is fairly simple: the middle one is c, the corners are ul, ur, dr, dl, and the edges are u, r, d, l. It should be obvious which is which.
You memorize 6 letters which all represent a number like A=1, B=2 etc. Notice how 7=-5 on clock because it is periodic with period 12. So -5 is memorized with G etc. Here is how to calculate the memo (note: tommy uses notation c-d where I use d->c, but both just mean 'what does d need to do to go to c?':
1. d->c
2. r->dr + L->U
3. U->L
4. r->d
5. U->UR + D->C + ul->l + r
6. c->u + d + L->UL + R->DR

Exec (start on the other side as the one you started to memo on):
1. all pins up except dl, with dl do number 1, with ur do number 2
2. Push ul pin down, with ur do number 3, with ul do number 4
3. Push ur pin down, make 2x2 in ul intuitively using ur and ul dials
4. Push ul pin up, with ul do number 5, with ur do number 6
5. Push dr pin down, make 2x3 on the left intuitively using ur and ul dials
6. Push dl pin up, and using ur and ul dials match everything except upper right corner
7. Push dr pin up, and solve the clock intuitively.

Thanks!! Good luck to you too! Is it your first year as well?
I don't have any particular goals for clock yet, but 7simul is fun so I'll probably practice it a bit
Yes thanks, first year indeed. Clock is quite easy to get good at but consistent turning in comp is hard lol, global 5 with 7-sim should definitely be doable for you in a short period of time :)

So, quick question. I’ve been starting 3BLD (OP/OP). I’ll switch to M2 for edges once I can get some more successes on OP. Now, I’ve been struggling with audio memo for edges, I’ll usually do fine for the first 3, maybe 4 pairs, but then kind of mess up or forget the last. Is it better to use audio for everything, or use audio for 3-4 edge pairs, and then just use images for the rest?

Yeah so the thing with audio is that it's normal that you forget it very quickly, meaning the faster your exec is, the easier it is to remember it all. This is why I don't recommend using audio memo for edges when you still use OP. First, do a bunch of solves with OP/OP. Switch to M2/OP as soon as possible, and when you can execute edges with M2 decently fast, then you should start use audio for edge memo. Still, you'll DNF a lot at first, but you'll get used to it and the DNF rate will go back to normal pretty quickly (at least in my experience).

Oh okay, that’s interesting. Thanks! So I should just use images until I learn M2?

Comp results (some meme results):
7x7: DNF. Messed up the edge parity alg and just gave up. Wasn't gonna make cutoff anymore anyway.

Megaminx: I got a 1:10.50 single on solve 1, and a 1:10.51 on solve 4 lol. Thing is, solve 4 had 2 corner twists, so that would have been an easy sub 1:10. In the end, I got an avg that was 0.1 slower than my PR. Surprisingly good, because all my mega practice was weekly comp.

Pyra: 3.82 or something single. Nice, now skewb avg and single are my only non-NR100 results. (Except clock but I haven't competed in that yet)

4x4: PR avg, nothing special.

2x2: Did poorly in round 1, 2.62 average. Finals was funny though, I got a 4.15 average. +2 on solve 1 and 2, mis-onelook on solve 4 and 5. It was my worst official 2x2 avg ever.

3x3: Double PR in round 1: 7.40 single, 8.51 avg. The average should have been sub 8, but I counted a 9.69...
In round 2 I didn't do too well. Just well enough to make finals! (Thanks to Twan for not registering in time)
In finals I started pretty consistently, and kinda choked on the last solves. 8.98 average.

Overall, I didn't really practice for this comp (only a little 2x2), so I didn't expect anything great. I'm just happy my 3x3 PRs don't suck as much anymore.

Not gonna lie, that sounds like some official bigBLD and MBLD to me
