I've been cubing for just over 2 months and don't have a speedcube but am only approaching sub-40, compared to quite a lot of people who seem to be improving a lot faster, would this be considered a slow rate of improvement?

Other than how much practice done each day are there other factors that contribute to how much you improve in a certain time?

What brand is the cube you have?

That is similar to my improvement rate. Just keep practicing.
I have a Rubik's brand and a random store bought cube that seems slightly better than the Rubik's brand but still nowhere near speedcube level.
Get a better 3x3. the MF3RS2 is decent.

That's pretty decent improvement, I've been cubing a bit over 3 months and I'm sub 40 with CFOP and Roux (recently switched) but I've been using a GTS2M for about 2 months. After you get a speedcube you'll see your times drop really quickly.

You're doing fine.

First you definitely need a better cube. Second, don't expect continuous improvement. Many people plateau (or even get worse) for a couple of months then have a sudden jump in speed, and this tends to repeat over and over. Especially when learning new methods or algorithms, expect a decrease in speed at first. When you get your first real speed cube, you must learn to finger trick the cube properly (watch youtube finger trick videos). If you are used to using your whole hand to turn the faces, your speed will go down a lot once you start finger-tricking, and then you will speed up dramatically afterwards.

I've been cubing on and off since 2013 and I'm just sub-18. I don't think there is a single definitive rate of improvement - it's all down to the individual. I personally wouldn't worry about 'slow' improvement; speed comes naturally after a bit of practice.

Different people hit plateaus where they don't improve at different times, but like other people have said, the first step is definitely to get a better cube. There are a lot of good ones out there that cost $4-5.

I've been cubing for about a month and a half now, and I average about 32ish seconds. My pb single is 19.86. Do you think that I'm improving too slowly or is this a normal pace?

You're improving way faster than me. I started cubing in March 2017. My pb single is 19.11 and I average 30ish.

That is pretty fast for only a month, it took me 6 months to get to that point, but I didn't start speedsolving until 3 months after I learned to solve a 3x3.

I was averaging that after just under a year of cubing, lol. (Although I was using a Rubik's brand for a lot of that time.) Your improvement rate is very impressive.

Thank you. I try to practice everyday and learn at least one PLL alg everyday. I do 2-look for both.

You really shouldn't be comparing yourself to others. You improve at a different rate that other people do and nothing is "good improvement rate" or "bad improvement rate."

Frankly speaking, 1 month after cubing since I first solved it on 16th Dec 2016, I couldn't even average sub-1:30!!!
Forget about averaging 36 seconds!!!:p
So, in my opinion you are improving really fast.
It was only after 3 months that I discoverd F2L and from there I just kept on practising and my times started to decrease eventually.
I am currently sub-15.
BTW, what is your main method?
