Hey, got my Pyraminx about 3 days ago, and I'd never heard of it before then, and I thought that instead of just learning a method I'd make my own up. I'd previously created my own no-algorithm methods for 4x4x4 and 2x2x2 using only 3x3x3 knowledge, and did all but the last pieces of the last 4 centres on 5x5x5 intutively too.

My method for Pyraminx is as follows: I first line centres and tips up on the correct face, then solve the 3 'base layer' (yellow for example) edges with R U R' based moves. Then either all 3, or just 1 of the last 3 edges are orientated correctly. If they are orientated correctly I either just do R U R' U R U R' or R U2 R' U2 R U2 R' to permute. If they aren't correctly permuted, I use the following process: I realised that by taking a yellow edge it changes the orientation of 2 of the last 3 edges, and therefore putting it back in would also change 2. So, by taking a yellow edge out and changing the orientation of the correct one and one of the incorrect ones, it leaves me with 2 incorrectly orientated edges, and a blue not in place. Then by putting it back in and changing the orientation of the new 2 incorrect edges, the Pyraminx can be solved.

Example solve: Yellow face is complete, centers and tips are complete.

First, I'd do U (or just twist the entire cube so that blue is facing me) so that the 2 incorrectly oriented edges (G/O and B/O) are towards me. Then, R' L' U L R to take out the Y/O edge and leave the G/O edge correctly permuted. Then put the Y/O edge back in with U' B' R B R'. Then I'd permute the edges with R U2 R' U2 R U2 R'. I average about 25 seconds with this method, but bear in mind I've only had the thing for 3 days!

I was wondering if there is any future in this method, or any other intuitive method, or if the only successful speed solving pyraminx method was to learn all the algorithms, and also whether there is anything I'm missing in my method that could speed it up. Thanks for your time and sorry about the huge bulk of text :P.

Cheers, Chukk

In the case you mentioned, I'd have Red facing me and use:
U' (R' U' L' U L U' R) (L' U L U) (L' U L U) U'

3 Edge Cycle (Anti Clockwise)
(L' U L U) (L' U L U)

3 Edge Cycle (Clockwise)
(R' U' R U') (R' U' R U')

Two Edge Flip & 3 Edge Cycle (Clockwise)
(R' U' L' U L U' R)

Sorry the algorithms here are incorrect. I haven't bothered to write them up before. They were just intuitive o.o

I'm sure someone has come up with methods of orienting and permuting 6 edges at once :-)

Tim.

I figured out all 5 LL algs by myself, averaged 35s the first day! I look on Jaap's site for solutions, but didn't use it, so I made my own method. My pyraminx is really stiff, I think a sub-10 average is possible for me with more practice., but it is a little too easy and boring. I screwed up my first 3 solves (18, 23, 18) at princeton, but came back with decent solves of 12 and 9. Still Chinese NR though! look on mzrg's site for ZB style pyraminx with 90+ algs!
