I'm getting sick and tired of the childish behaviour here.

I am not sure if this was mentioned before, or if it is a good idea, but maybe we should have more moderators.

This way there will be at least one on at all times, ready to post Mike's response, then close the thread.

That may or may not work. Perhaps you could make mods out of the people who are on the most, but separate it by time-zone, so that it's always day for at least one mod.

The thing is, all of the moderators are volunteers and there's no guarantee that one of us will be online all the time.

We can be more militant about closing threads. I'm kind of new to the job and trying to find a happy medium between doing nothing and being a jerk.

Sounds like an OK plan, not bad, at least. We'll see what pjk thinks.

I'm talking abot threads like this. Seriously, who gives a crap? This sort of thing is the kind of conversation 10 year olds indulge in. I'm so sick and tired of seeing "monkeydude this" and "monkeydude that". He's forever getting bashed for SOMETHING, or he's starting a stupid thread/posting a stupid video.

If this whole thing was caused by me (as is claimed in the first post), it would be logical to assume that if I left, and stopped making videos, that the stupid posts would stop.
However, I find this hard to believe. Bush left the presidency, and he still gets lots of news coverage, same with Cheney.
What I am trying to get to here, is that no matter what we do, short of closing the website, stupid posts will continue to be posted.

So there is only two ways that I see to limit these stupid posts.

1) Limit the people who can join, this would also include the idea of restricting to beginners section for a time, etc.
and/or
2) Being able to quickly and efficiently respond and close threads. Using Mike's response, but leaving it there, but closed for a certain amount of time for people to see what not to do.

By finding a good way to do option two, within a month or two (hopefully) the new people who want to come, after seeing the intro video as well as all these closed threads, will know the correct procedure, and useless spamming will go down slowly.

I am interested if Monkydude1313 'bashers' also would complain about him when he/she and monkeydude are attending the same competition. ^^

Ps. I've read previous posts globally.

lol. im sick and tired of the sick and tired threads.

So is speedsolving.com going to be a closed community now?

Please no. TP went to a closed forum and I think it has gone downhill ever since (might be because seeing someone truncate a cube in a semi-differnt way doesn't interest me). My recomendations would be to make the search function more prominent on the home page since it is such a big topic of discussion. Also, don't try to alienate new members, as some of us really do want to become a part of the community.

You were an example.

I'm here every moment I get, which is usually from 7:00-10:00 AM my time and then 1:00-9:00 PM my time. Not the whole time just reading, but I'll look at new threads, wait a few minutes, refresh the homepage, look at the new posts, etc.

I'm used to new people, and their intentions are good. If we had a closed community, nobody would ever be added. Then it wouldn't be a free community anymore. I'm just going to point out a really good example:

AndyK: His first post was a printable guide for all cubes 2x2-5x5. How can we not allow that? It was a really good post.

My only hope is that the welcome video can improve this. Let's see the results of that, then decide where to progress.

I think that during the first couple weeks of a members attendance here, they should be greeted with a page letting them know about this issue.

"Welcome!

Before going off and enjoying the forum please note that this community is very large, and many basic questions have already been answered. Please use the search function to see if your question has already been answered to keep the forum clean, and free of repetitious threads. This is a problem that we are working to resolve and we would greatly appreciate your cooperation. Thank you in advance and enjoy the forum."

If anyone ignores it, respond with a link, and a reminder of the search function and or Google, and close the thread right there. Move it too.

Also if anyone thinks this will scare away people....please explain....I candy coated the hell out of this one.

Yea I probably would

Anyway, I'm sorry BYU but I honestly think the welcome video is a pretty useless idea. Not "typin lyk3 dis" comes from maturity and experience, not someone telling you random facts about the forum. I think that the general misuse of the forum is caused by the same attitude as IM talk, which is why I used that example.

Edit: If people need a video because they aren't interested in reading the basic rules, then those people aren't going to be changed by a video. It's the same attitude of expecting information at your command without having to put in any work.

byu is totally right. Most newcomers are like whatever.

The welcome video is good for helping newcomers, but it won't necessarily encourage people to not to abuse. Just like what Ethan said.

@SneakyPanda: This community is large but not very large. Large would be like more than 20,000 members

Man, this is tough.

I think pjk's approach is a LITTLE excessive, because what if someone who averages 9.8 wants to join, and has loads of info they can share with us?

I personally think we need to have the forum "split up". There will be the "A" section, for example, where all of the regulars can be, and only members who we KNOW won't cause a mess of the forum can post. Everyone else cannot see this forum, until an admin decides they can. When new people sign up, they won't even know that the A section exists until one day an admin will allow them "in" to that part of the forum.

This still isn't a great solution though...

On another forum, they had a section that only those who were chosen were allowed to post in (I think it was a "politics and religion discussion" section :) ). Everyone else could still read those through, they just couldn't contribute to the discussions.
I think this is an excellent idea. If there is a "SUPER-DUPER SECTION THAT IS FULL OF JUICY INFORMATION", new members might be attracted there first. And then some of the other sections could be merged to try to decrease the size of the forum at the moment (which I feel is too large).

A possible idea for this extra section might be "advanced discussion section" or something. I don't really know what would be a good idea; just something that gets the noobies attention.

I kind of like the idea to have a separate section for only approved people, as long as it is viewable by others. That way, people have an incentive to stop posting rubbish; to get into the other forum.

I agree with the "split" idea. It allows discussion to be higher quality and doesn't make the forum be viewed as "a forum against children." Reading most of this thread makes it seem that this forum is very against children.

The only problem with this idea of splitting it is one thing.

A lot of newcomers already think that the other members 'act superior,' as shown in samlambert's (or some name like that) thread about him leaving. In there at least 3 people talked about how they felt other people were acting superior, and how it ruined their experience on the forums.

How does this tie into our discussion?
By splitting the forum, it is acting as if the people allowed in there are "superior" to the other members. While it is usually the case, most newcomers won't like the idea, especially if they think they deserve to be in there and they aren't.

So I don't think splitting the forums is a solution that will fix the problem. It could even go the other way, and when people try to be good, and they still aren't accepted, they will randomly spam and flame everyone because they give up and don't care anymore.

Just my opinion.
~Chris
