Hey!

I have just started solving the Rubik's cube and am a beginner! I have some questions about speedcubing! If you guys could answer them then it would give me a great kick into the wonderful world of speecubing! Thanks!

I have just started playing with my Rubik's cube and have learned to solve the cube using the 'beginner's method'.
My best time is 1min 44secs. (Bad, I know! Haha :P)
I want to start to try and speedcube, but I am currently using a Rubik's brand cube but I have lubricated it. After watching some videos on YouTube, I decided to use silicone spray, and it isn't actually that bad!

Here are some questions I have:

1. I ordered a Dayan GuHong Stickerless and was wondering how I would lubricate it and tension it (or is it the same as the Rubik's brand?)

2. Also, I am completely stuck on where to start :/ I have watched some tutorials on YouTube for the CFOP system but they don't make any sense to me. Should I stick with the beginner's method for a while or...? I feel that I have mastered the beginners method because when I started I got times of <4mins, and I have significantly cut that time down.

3. Is the Dayan GuHong Stickerless a good cube to start off with? I mainly bought it because it looks awesome :D There are so many cubes out the that are all highly recommended by top cubers on YouTube (crazybadcuber, camcuber, etc.) And I really have no clue where to start! What is a good cube to start off with for a beginner?

Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate it :)

Cheers!

I started on a guhong stickerless myself. Use these pages to learn CFOP, or learn Roux. Keep going! I can get times under 40 seconds with the beginners method, but I prefer CFOP or Roux. Good luck!

I don't know if you have Libix or some similar lube, but here's a good way to lube your Guhong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4paID_54lQ
If you don't have Lubix etc, you can use the vid to tension your cube properly and use a bit silicone spray to lube the cubies.

2. I think it is best to stick with the beginner's method until you get 50-60 second averages.
3. The Dayan GuHong Stickerless is a really great cube. Some say the Zhanchi is better but they are all very similar.

Twistaar, what beginners method have you learned? Normally you don't have to make a sudden switch to the CFOP system from your beginners method, you can do it gradually. Start off by learning cross and intuitive F2L while still using your beginners method for the last layer. Then learn 2 look OLL and 2 look PLL. Or you could go in a completely different direction and learn Roux, but that's difficult for beginners because it requires very good understanding of the cube and is most likely not at all similar to your beginners method.

I LOLed.

GuHong should be fine but you can't compete with a stickerless cube.

It is possible to sub 30 beginner's methods. You may want to drop your times a bit more before changing method.
Look at Petrus, Roux and ZZ. You may prefer one of them to CFOP.

There are many good video tutorials on how to properly lube and tension cubes.
I personally strip a cube down to the core to make sure the tensions are even by pulling each centre piece away from the core. Once rebuilt adjust each side by the same amount and the tensions will stay equal.
