[Help Thread] Hoya Discussion

Indeed!

I got a 1:05.14 a couple days ago. There was double parity. Take those away and it would have been my first sub-1.

The Cross was pretty easy in that solve. All the pieces seemed to be right up front whenever I needed them. Overall my Cross lookahead is getting much better. Though, I still have trouble finding my first 2 cross pieces while polishing off my F4C. But I have issues with making my F4C efficiently anyway.

Awesome! A few days ago I got quite a lot of solves in the 1:03-1:08 range. I got worse again though because I was mainly practicing 3x3 and learning full OLL :/
Get that sub 1 solve already! :) Whenever I do 4x4 I film myself in hopes that I get a sub 1 solve on cam. I'm also really looking forward to the Aosu, because my shengshou and weisu are pretty bad :/

My Weisu is pretty amazing. It's basically not lubed right now and I have basically no issues. I even lost one of the small internal pieces without realizing it for weeks. Replacements are coming. It seemed okay in the video you made. Do you have it really tight?

My Aosu should arrive today. I hear good things.

I loosend it to get better corner cutting. It's just that it's so flimsy and it feels unstable. Also I still couldn't fix the issue of the inner layer turning by itself.
Maybe it's just that I suck at turning bigger cubes, or I overlubed it. I'm gonna see how the aosu is before I work on my weisu. Judging from videos, the aosu seems amazing.

Yeah.. if all else fails, I'd say tighten it a smidge and don't use took much lube (it doesn't need it).

I've been doing a lot of Hoya5 as well... I think I've officially dumped reduction. Might do some walkthroughs, but my Shengshou 5 is garbage... pops all the time.

A video with walkthrough solves would be really interesting. I could certainly use some tips :/

Any more tips on my solve? It's in post #116 I think

I can't really see much due to the angle, but your first two centres could use some work, you paused quite a lot, even during the first centre. Also you then made your cross centre followed by the centre on the back face, I would recommend doing the inverse, making your B face centre and then making your cross centre. This makes use of building centres on the F and U faces and avoids building it on B. There was a slight gap from building your cross centre to starting hoya edges, although your hoya edges were executed very well. Unfortunately, like I said, I couldn't see much due to the angle but hopefully this helps. Also what do you normally average on 4x4? Would you consider this a good solve?

Edit: Just wanted to ask, what time are people usually finished hoya cross/edge pairing and what do you average? I am usually done hoya cross in 20-25 and am usually finished edge pairing in 30-35, but I average 55. I think I need some serious work on my 3x3 stage.

What Clarkey said. There were pauses during First 2 Centers that a little better inspection/lookahead could wipe out. But F4C are my biggest weak point, and this solve was better than my PB, so I don't know what more I could tell ya.

And the Second 2 Centers did appear a bit awkward. I usually make my Cross Center first, put it on the B face, then make the last 4th center and again I'll rotate to put on the B face. But as long as you don't have to do a y2 when you're done, I think it's fine however you do it.

Your L8E were great. A little faster TPS, maybe? But that all comes with practicepracticepractice.

That's awesome Clarkeeyyy. Can't wait to see it :)

So last night... decent F4C, decent cross. Then I did the first 4 of L8E and skipped the rest. It took me a moment to realize this. F2L, OLL.. got PLL parity... then PLL. Stopped Timer: 1:01.81. FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

My PB Ao5 has gone down by 5 seconds in the past few weeks, and Ao12 is down by 7 seconds... and still no sub1 single.

FINALLY!!! First sub1 4x4 single, 59.86 No parity, maybe 1 skipped edge... otherwise full step. Thanks Hoya!! (And Aaron LoPrete!)

(there was a lot of celebratory yelling... my cats were confused)

Btw... all these PBs set today were with the Aosu. I had issues with it at first, it's really a fantastic cube.

congrats on the sub 1 single, a lot more to follow soon hopefully :)
Is Aosu better than Weisu?

Depends on what you like. It's got a much lighter feel to it, where I thought the weisu was a bit more sluggish. I thought I preferred sluggish for controllability's sake. But one day with the Aosu, and I demolished all my PB's. So I guess I gotta switch.

I guess I should get one too then, should help cut my times by a few seconds. Btw your videos for cross edges were very helpful, thank you for covering each possible case so nicely :)

Congrats! I'm still working on getting another sub 1 solve so I can get it on cam.
Btw I got my aosu today. Did a few turns and algs and fell in love with it.

I seriously can't wait for mine to arrive. The one problem with my weisu is its horrible sluggish feel, hopefully the Aosu resolves this.

Mine was actually pretty terrible out of the box, and even worse when I lubed it... but only on one axis.I did a partial tear-down and looked at the internals. Turns out there was a plastic shaving wedged inbetween the round part and circle part of one of the centers causing extra friction. When I put it back together, it was fantastic. It's definitely my main now.

Also, I mistakenly loosened it too much and had a couple explosions. But what I learned is that it does not need to be very loose to get good corner cutting.

It's still a little catchy, and I'm having trouble finding the right tensions, but that's true for all big cubes. Once it's broken in a bit more I'm gonna do another teardown. Antoine Cantin posted that he did this and it improved the performance of his Aosu greatly. So I'll give it another hundred or so solves.

Edit: But to address your concerns: Yes, they fixed the sluggishness. Weird side note: I liked the sluggishness.

Congratz! I remember my first sub 1. Once you get one, as long as you keep practicing, they will come pouring in.
