[Help Thread] Hoya Discussion

When people say Hoya5, is it any different to Hoya for 4x4, like how Yau5 is different from Yau, or is it just the same thing done on a 5x5?

The steps are essentially the same: F4C, Cross Edges, L2C, L8E, gogogo. There really isn't much different about it, in that respect. Some of the Cross Edge inserts are a different, but most are done practically the same with only minor variations.

The difference in approach of Hoya4 to Hoya5 is about as different as Yau4 to Yau5. It's basically the same system until you get to L8E, then it's dealer's choice on how you want to execute.

Hoya5 is finally kicking in. My reduction PB was 2:20.xx. I got 2:21.xx with Hoya5 3 times in 10 solves.

I finally got a new PB after 16 solves: 2:17.46. I had a pop during PLL, too. I finished the last half of Y perm with a center piece missing, and my middle finger plugging the hole until I could put it back in and stop the timer!

I want to learn Hoya5. Where do I start?

EDIT: I have come as far as building centers and cross Hoya style on 5X5, but I do not know how to complete un solved tredges without breaking up all the good stuff I have done.

Do you mean the last 8 tredges after the 4 cross edges? You can use freeslice or a yau type of approach. There are videos on youtube about both :)

Yes, I ment last 8 tredges. If I start to free slice I will break up allready built centers. I do not know the Yau approahc on 5X5 so I might look into that.

The thing with free slice is that you only do 4 tredges with it, then store them on U. Just use inserts to get edges on F. After you've done the first 4 tredges, you align the centers again.
The remaining tredges you solve one by one, based on slice, place edge, slice back and so on.

I start to like Hoya more and more. Today I had two nearly sub-2 min solves: 2:01.21 (PB by 0.12 seconds) and 2:02.72... I hope my first sub-2 will come soon.
Until now I was not really sure if I will stay with Hoya, but I guess I will.

One question about the centers. Do you always do the same four colors to begin with, or do you do the centers depending on already grouped centerpieces after the scramble?
I always start with blue / green, then do the white face, hold the cube with white at the bottom and green on the left side and do red on the back.

I would strongly recommend making use of all the possibilities. So for me that is either red/orange or blue/green. To make it easier to know which center you should build after white, you may create a "habit", so that you always hold orange or green to the left. That way, you can start with what's easier and always know what center to build after white.

I make two centres (except my cross colours) and then build my next two centres based on whats easiest when I have finished my first two centres.

I start on which ever center would be the easiest or most efficient, as long as it is not my cross color or my opposite color of my cross color. So I can start on blue, green, orange, or red. you shouldn't restrict yourself to just 2 colors when you have 2 other options. being color neutral for centers really isn't that hard. On 4x4, after my first 2 centers are complete, then I do my cross color center and then the center the is in front of it. But on 5x5, I can start on whichever of the 3 centers (not yellow because it is opposite my cross color) is most efficient, though I find myself starting on white most of the time.

Again a new PB, but not sub-2 yet.... 2:01.07.
Got this time with for me unusual red / orange as first two centers, so thanks all for your help.

I guess it's time to re-watch your videos about the cross edges. If I knew all your tips, the time would have most probably been sub-2 :)

Let me just start by saying sorry for the: bad quality of the video(filmed on an ipod), the weird size of the video(Z x Y), the angle(I own no tripods or anything really), and for the sound. Whenever i convert from .mov to .wmv it ALWAYS messes up the sound.

Anyway, this is a pretty good Hoya solve for me, if you guys could give me any tips possible that'd be awesome, I'm always looking for help!

Here's the scramble: Bw' Lw' Bw R2 F2 Uw' Rw2 Dw2 Fw2 L Fw2 Lw' D2 Bw2 R' F U2 F Uw L Uw' R' Fw2 Uw Bw' U' Bw2 R2 Bw2 R' D' F L' D Fw R Dw' Fw Lw Dw'
