I started around the same time you did and am about as fast.
It's like any skill the more you practise the faster you get, I am learning 1 algorithm a day until I have PLL properly memorised and all 7 algs for the 2 look OLL properly memorised. I've noticed that my recognition of cases and turning speeds are getting faster, though lots of my practise is untimed solves whenever I have a few spare mins.
sadly I'm older than most cubers and have a business to run so don't have as much free time as I'd like, but hey. One of the things I like about cubing is I can practise at work inbetween stuff, I have a cube on my desk and I pick it up and solve it whenever I have 2 mins spare.
I've definitely had a couple of sub 1 min solves, though they were untimed ones so I don't know how fast they were exactly, but I can tell that I'm finding and inserting F2L pairs faster, or building Roux blocks faster than I was last week, and the OLL/PLL algs I have in muscle memory now are way quicker than the ones I need to pause and think about.
People learn things at different speeds, just keep track of your progress, set yourself realistic goals, keep practising and you'll be a lot faster before you know it.
