How do you plan your cross? (During inspection time)

I usually look for a center piece with one or more edges attached (and oriented correctly) and then look opposite that center piece for edges that are correctly oriented... But there are usually crosses that come with fewer moves, but are less obvious to the eye.

Fridrich users, what is your strategy for finding a good cross during inspection time? You are welcome to use scramble examples too.

I only look at one side: the white side. Then I try to visualize all the steps of the cross solve, and then after inspection try to execute it.
This doesn't always work, and it's definetly not the fastest method, because if you are color neutral, you have 5 more sides to look at, although that does reduce the time you can spend on remembering the steps to solve the cross...

I just search the white center piece and then look for the 4 edges with white in it and try to find a fast way how to put them into their place. When I've finished that, I sometimes search the first F2L pair...
