How do you improve your centers and edge pairing on 5x5?

Practice, bigcubes.com and if you don't already have a V or SS then getting one may improve your times a little instantly.

Getting a V-Cube or a ShengShou won't improve your times instantly because you still need to break it in :P But from my experience, looking ahead during edge pairing improves your solves more. You just need to turn fast for centers, not too much lookahead there. Learn tricks from bigcubes.com or watch Dan or Michal's videos to pick up tricks.

Can we seriously see anything happening at that speed? I really liked the videos just posted, got instant PB.

I have to confess 5x5 has been a very slow improving event for me. Also speaking to others this is not uncommon. I was stuck at ~3m10s for months. Recently I have been seeing those times drop to a pb Ao5 of 2:38.xy and a pb single of 2:25.xy.

My splits used to be:-
Centres: 1m
Edge pairing: 1m30s
3x3 Stage: 40s

The 30 second saving is probably about 15s from centres and 15s from edges. The improvement in both those areas is undoubtedly down to both practice and lookahead. The lookahead on 5x5 edge pairing is far more complex and you end up tracking and remembering multiple edges. One quite good tip that I tried to follow was to concentrate on particular edges 1st. So after centres go for all edges with white in them, and after that all those with yellow. For me I do all blue edges 1st (Im B/G Opposite Neutral), then green. If I see an obvious tredge pairing that is not the colour I am doing when doing this I will complete that one when I see it and then go back to the colour I was doing. This method helps by minimising those edges you are trying to track and lookahead for. This may well be worth you trying if you do not do so already.

Also try to not look at what you are doing at all. Pairing is always the same sets of moves in freeslice so it should always be easier that doing it for 3x3. Try to force yourself to always be looking for edges rather that watching the particular pairing you are working on and try and be aware of what is in the RB and LB slots.

As mentioned 5x5 has had some very frustrating plateaus for me but with some slow turning and lookahead and a bucket load of practice your times should come down soon :)
