A small testament to slowing down and looking ahead during F2L:

I’m a slow cuber averaging ~ 45 seconds for about a year now. YES, that’s right 45-ish!
The only practice for 3x3x3 CFOP I get/do is when I restore the cube after a failed BLD attempt or when I mess up a scramble in FMC…

Yesterday on a train ride I decided to practice CFOP a little, focusing on looking ahead: within an hour I dropped my av12 from 45-ish to a best av12 of 37 seconds…

Sure, this is still slow (using 2 look OLL and even some 2 look PLL as I have already forgotten severall PLL’s…) but it clearly shows that even an old dog (with some bad habits) can learn a new trick.

I’m now considering actually practicing 3x3 for “speed” focusing on look ahead and relearning the PLL’s and the dot OLL cases that I forgot.
But as speed is absolutely not my main goal in cubing I don’t think it will be more than about 30 min a day though.

This happens to pretty much everyone. If you dont know intuitive F2L, learn it. If you do, just cube. Seriously, by just cubing for like an hour everyday you'll be amazed at how much you improve

I respectfully disagree: targeted practice will beat "just cubing" many times over...

Totally agree with you, I repeated average solves everyday for ages, I have only recently been thinking about how I solve and have been actively trying to improve it and I have knocked so much time off my average. Best thing is that there is still loads of room for improvement!

"Perfect practice makes perfect"

I'd say at this stage, explore! Don't aimlessly practice. Just keep messing about with new ways to do stuff. If you want to, you can even switch methods! At your level, you're basically free to do anything, unlike me 3 months ago, who was averaging 25 with CFOP and hating it.
I had to force myself to use roux although it took me like 5 minutes a solve for a week or two. Now, I'm loving it.
So yeah, explore- you're free, if you're sticking with CFOP, maybe experiment with different ways to build the cross.
Also, TURN SLOW AND LOOK AHEAD

I've never done targeted practice before. It's seriously not important. All elements of your solve will improve through normal solving, which is all that really matters. People who are trying metronome, using F2L only cubes, doing LL solves etc., here's a word of advice: don't. Solving again and again has worked just fine for me.

I do have to say that learning 1-look OLL, while certainly improving time, is quite overrated and that learning how to execute F2L quickly will carry you farther than anything. Once you get equipped with a 2-look OLL and quick PLL, you can get under 30 during a lot of your solves so long as your intuitive F2L is there. For me personally, my 2-look OLL and PLL carried me to only about 35-36 seconds, but once I gained a further mastery of F2L, my time was all the way down to about 25 seconds. After this, I re-lubed my cube and got my competition averages down to about 21-22 seconds. At the most recent competition, I bought an *excellent cube* (the guy from Lubix was there) for a very good price. I had stopped timing myself since that competition but I recently started retiming and my average is not only sub-20 but sub-19 as well. So, one can easily see that it is possible to get 17.xx or maybe even 16.xx averages without the 1-look OLL.

Look-ahead FTW...
But turn fast at the same time.
