Hello,

I am trying to improve my speed for solving the 3x3x3 cube. Currently I average around 2 minutes per solve, and the method I use is that from https://youtube.com/pogobat - that channel. I can't see any possible way to speed up this method other than faster hands. Are there other methods to help solve the cube faster?

Thanks,
Shannon

oh,I can not help me,though very want to help you.I do not know much about how to solve magic cube,I just a freshman too.maybe you can send some private messages to other Professional guys. good luck

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK lol. You should learn a speedsolving method and get a speedcube.

The main methods are:
CFOP
ZZ
Roux
Petrus

The main speedcubes are:
Dayan GuHong
Dayan Zanchi

The method you're using is called beginner's method. It's not very fast.

I recommend doing a bunch of research in the wiki about methods and sub-steps and so forth.

Have fun speedsolving!

yes, you are right ,and I hope to register in "twistypuzzles".but I do not know why it is failed. though in order to sell my magic cube, then I go in this forum. but I am interested in playing it too. I think the 55mm dayan zhanchi magic cube is good.

I just have a regular cube, but I am not sure of those methods. :/

Just youtube a few videos, since, like me, you learnt from Dan Brown the Layer by Layer method, I think the easiest speedcubing method you can learn from here is the Fridrich method (CFOP). Its not too hard to learn, just skipping the step of flipping the cube and inserting the edges (the second layer) and also, its a different and faster approach to finish the top layer! The Fridrich method has 4 general steps, the cross (same as your beginner method) the F2L (which is the corners and edges combined into one step), OLL (Orientation of Last Layer, which is flipping all colours of the top layer up) and PLL (Permutation of Last Layer, which is putting all the pieces in the right place).

I know it may seem a lot to take in, but really taking it one step at a time, the basic Fridrich (2look OLL and 2look PLL) can be learnt within a few days, and your speed will increase DRASTICALLY! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3zmU8O7CKw (good F2L tutorial to start things off)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iZL03cLhC0 (Great 2look OLL tutorial)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmACMcLvR_w (Great 2look PLL tutorial)

The videos will explain and clarify everything :)

Try Badmephistos videos. If you are currently doing a layer by layer method, try to learn the ideas behind F2L (acronym for first two layers). Basically you insert the corner and the edge piece which sits above it at the same time. To do this you move them around (usually on the U face) until they get to a situation where you can put them in together. Badmephisto has an excellent tutorial about this, and I also recommend Rido's Hunting Story as a different approach to explaining it which may work for you.

Then look at the way you solve your last layer. Try (in stages) to learn what we refer to as a 4-look last layer. The idea here is that after the first two layers are complete you can solve the last layer in no more than 4 separate algorithms. To work up to that you can turn the top face the same colour by using 2 of the algs you already know: 5) F R U Ri Ui Fi will make a cross on top of the cube if applied repeatedly (line should go across the cube, L shape in top left), and the repeated use of 8) Ri Di R D will make your corners all the same colour too. From here you can learn 4 algs which always solve the cube from this position in no more than two applications, following badmephistos tutorial. Once you have mastered those four, you can start looking at better ways to turn the top layer the same colour (known as OLL or orient last layer). There are only a few cases here too, and you can learn them one at a time, safe in the knowledge that any time a case comes up you don't know, 8) Ri Di R D will come to your rescue.

When you start, try and make your cross entirely on the bottom of the cube, (this will help tremendously later) and work towards getting sub 1 minute times. What I have outlined is an introduction to the CFOP method of solving. There are others that are worthy of you checking out (as mentioned by Noahaha), but many people start with this one since it is the one most related tot he layer by layer method most people learn as a beginner. Once you have the key concepts of CFOP (F2L pair and insert, OLL and PLL) try getting a feel for the key concepts of the other methods mentioned. You will learn about things such as edge orientation and block building, CLL and LSE. You will have more questions. Post them here and we will answer them as best we can, but don't forget to check the Wiki or Google first in case its a question that has already been answered a thousand times. Welcome to the community.

i learnt from dan brown too about a year and a half ago and i just kept messing around with my cube and my average went down from 4/5 mins to low 20 seconds and my personal best is 15 seconds, just keep practicing, get a good cube (dayan zhanchi or guhong from ebay/amazon) and just practice, whatch what happens to other pieces when you do an algorithm and create your own shortcuts :D

thats what i did anyway :p
oh and if you get a good cube, using your finger tips instead of your palm to turn a side of the cube makes it so much faster!

The top two methods I recommend are friedrich and ZZ, but they both have complicated parts. For friedrich, it is F2L and in ZZ, it's the EOline. You can learn both fairly easily though.

Practice is really what matters, though. You'll cut your time in half in about a week from where you are now.
Also, to get any better, you absolutly have to lubricate your cube if you cant get your hands on a better one. Also, learn how to blind solve once you've gotten to sub one. Its pretty easy to learn and do, actually.

Your biggest tool to cubing is youtube, though. You can practically learn how to beat the world record on that place.
