Greetings everyone, I'm Don Harper
I have a handwritten scrap of paper that says I first solved the Rubik’s Cube on February 10, 1981 at 6:22 pm. My wife Leona and our friend Phil Oller were there to witness it. It was actually Phil’s idea to write down the date and time — and I still have that piece of paper. (I need to shrink it some before I attach it, I think)
At the time, I was stationed at NAS Whiting Field in Milton, Florida on shore duty. I worked as an assistant manager at the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters 2945
I figured out my own pairing method back then, decided it was way too slow (for me) as I wanted in on the new "speedcubing" thing. I went searching for the answers to that, Later in 1981 I went to 2 contests, and continued to make it a big part of my life for 46 years. I just walked out of my my first WCA contest, the UCO Mega Cube-Off 2026 last weekend.
