I found you can often solve the first two opposite centres on 4x4x4 using a Guimond first two steps style and it can be done in rather few turns.

Solve first centre in mixed opposite colours. That can mostly be compleated in 1-2 turns or it is even done already. Next pair up two more pices and then, when placing these choose to place it opposite of the first centre you built or exachange two of the first centre pices while placing the opposite ones to get a better pattern or even separate completly. Use the same style for the last two pices and then separate what's left (if any). Separation is exactly the same turns as for 2x2x2/CF Guimond.

Try it, it's nice :)

Just a little better than the normal method. The best part is that you can see more of the solve while inspecting.

But OK, it's like Guimond corners, sometimes it's really easy, I solved first two centres in 6 turns (one side was done mixed in the scramble), if I used the normal method it would have been like 10-12 I guess.

I also tried it on 5x5x5, did all 6 and then separation, timed it and it took 2:30 minutes :p
