[Help Thread] Gan XS suddenly became really bad...

I bought a Gan XS a few months ago and it was amazing for quite a few weeks and I was able to bring my PB down a lot using it. However, it suddenly started acting up. The corner cutting became horrendous, turning was awkward and far from smooth and there was lots of spring noise. I cannot recall doing anything to cause this and have tried many things to try and fix this. Something that worked quite well was lubing the springs (although not to a high standard as they are encased in plastic and I am a bit of a newbie). This seemed to make the corner cutting better and reduce the spring noise although the cube is still far from its original state and is comparable to a bad budget cube. This is very frustrating as I spent a lot of money on this cube and it feels as though it has been wasted.

I would be very thankful for any input on my problem

I don’t think your cube would just go bad. Have you dropped it and cracked something internally? Gotten it wet where their might now be rust? Used something for lube that melted the plastic? Gotten dirt/grime inside it? Overtightened it? Over-loosened it?

My 11 year old son borrowed my Skewb. After two weeks, it turned terribly. He had kept it in his backpack which was full of crumbs and something sandy. Had to take it apart and thoroughly clean and relube it. Good as new.

My 8 year old daughter borrowed my Valk 2 M. Got it back and it was wonky. Somehow, she turned and twisted the core in a funny way, where it was internally no longer aligned. Again, I was able to take it apart and reassemble. Good as new.

if you havent already, try to take the whole cube apart and clean the pieces, open the center caps and clean the dirt there too, and for the spring noise i once had it on one of my 3x3's, it fixed though after some use. If the spring noise still is there try to take out the spring and put it back in. Lube might help after that

I bought a Gan X many months ago, it was amazing for 5 days, then, without any reason, no dropping or anything, it became garbage. I took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly. Still garbage. I've had this problem with many cubes. Only the GTS2M cubes seem to last (me) for a long time, most other cubes seem to go bad and never return, especially Gan X. It was amazing while it lasted though.

Welcome to Gan! We charge you way too much money for things that suck!

Where did you buy it from? Maybe it has something to do with factory lube drying out suddenly? Or after breaking in the pieces the feeling changed? Don’t know what could cause that significant of a change.

So people are saying they have Gan X or XS and it is still working fine after 4-5 months???

Thanks for all the replies.
I am pretty sure it is something to do with the springs as it felt amazing (although really loose) when I took them out. The corner cutting stayed the same but that is probably because I haven't lubed it in a few weeks. I might just cut my losses and get the rs3m 2020 and use this as a lesson not to buy expensive cubes (even though I just got the gan megaminx and pyraminx for christmas :))

the springs might be rusted, or if they arent then use lubicle black on the springs in the cube, it might help.

A few weeks ago my yuxin little magic had a similar problem and i toke it apart and found parts that had broken off from the corner pieces and were messing up the core but i doubt that with a cube like the xs this would happen

So, it just can't "go bad". Something has happened or is happening to it. Something is broken, or bent, or too tight, or too loose, or too rough, or missing, or uneven. You mentioned you used the cube without springs? Did you put them back in? Did you put them ALL back in? Have they been bent? Rusted?

It would be great if we could see the internals--see what's happened to this cube.

Every piece looks exactly the same so none of them can be broken. There's a slight chip on the internal part of the core but that doesn't come into contact with any pieces so it doesn't make a difference. I have it on my usual settings which worked fine in the past. It feels like the pieces aren't sliding over each other smoothly even after cleaning and lubing. Nothing is missing, the core isn't bent and none of the pieces are broken. It feels like it is sort of too tight even though it is on one of the loosest settings.

Can you post clear pics of the internals, including the chip?

Just trying to help. No doubt something is wrong with your cube.

Same thing happened to my X last month after 15 months of use.
Im getting chips in the torpedo, cracks in the frosted plastic, loud creaking noise, and the magnet capsures are becoming loose.
