FMC scramble at Dutch

Hi Alexander,

The FMC Dutch championships 2007 scramble was:

D' U' F R D2 B' D2 U' F2 L F' L' R2 D2 B D2 L2 B' L2 R B2 F' D U' B'

After you post your solution I will tell you my DNF story......

Good luck

Guus

I've been wanting to read Arnaud's guide but never did, this is my first fewest moves attempt, done in 8 minutes (Writing the solution took up most of the time, haha). 40 move solution, I'm really happy :)

2x2x2 (never learned it but guessed lol): x2 y2 F2 D2 B' R F2 D F2 L D' (9)
finish cross: y2 F U R' (12)
2nd pair: U' F' U F2 U' F' (18)
3rd pair: R U R' U2 R' U' R (25)
4th pair: U2 F' U2 F U' F' U F (33)
OLL + PLL Skip: y2 F U R U' R' F' (39)
Adjust last layer: U (40)

Tryed many things but the best start was for me:
F' L' B' L F U2 L U
D2 L' D2 L B' U B2

a 15 move F2L + B' set up move before scramble
the only ending i could find was just COLL + PLL

F D2 R' D2 R D2 R F' B R2 B'
U2 R B F' U2 B' F R U2 R' B'

a 37 move solution.

Hi guys,

The story is that I was really stupid:
Within 30 minutes I found a nice 32 move solution, wrote it down, checked it.
In the next half hour I found an even beter solution in 31 moves, wrote it down, checked it twice and cancelled the 32-move solution. When the jury checked my solution something seemed wrong with my soution. There was an error in the commutator that did the corner-cycle insertion. The inverse of L F' L' is not L' F L ! I overlooked it twice during checking......
The 31-move solution would had been a Dutch record and placed me third on the current WCA world ranking.

The story goes on: Just after the competition Arnaud showed me that the inverse sramble had a very easy and straightforward (speedsolving) F2L solution but he didn't know how to solve the LL under 20 moves. I recognized this LL immediatley as a 10+correction move LL-process. So this would have given a 16+10+1=27 move solution. We will propose an FMC-team solve at the WCA.

After I returned home I checked the sramble once more and in 10 minutes I found a 20 move skeleton leaving a corner-3-cycle. After another 10 minutes this gave me a 25-move solution using insertions.

Poor me, all what left is a DNF behind my name....

Tonight I will post those solutions 32, 31, 27 and 25 moves.

Guus

NB. Arnaud promised me to learn insertions and more LL algorithms which makes him very dangerous for the next FMC event.

That's one of the things that always suprised me about Arnaud. Even with his lack of algorithms, he's still able to do some extremely good FMCs... I think that's just how Arnaud works. Like with the Pyraminx, he goes for fewest moves as well.

Hi guys

See what nerves could do during competition: I thought my first solution, the one I cancelled, was 32 moves but now when I count again it actually seems to be 29 moves!!

Here are my solutions.
Dutch nationals 2007 scramble: D' U' F R D2 B' D2 U' F2 L F' L' R2 D2 B D2 L2 B' L2 R B2 F' D U' B'

my first solution:
L2 D B D' B L U' B' D' U' B2 D L' U L' U' L B' L2 R' U' R F' B U' L U F L' (29)
my second solution:
L2 D.L F L' B L F' L' B'.B D' L' B U' L2 R' U2 R' F R F2 R' F R D R F R' F' D' F2 R (31) (insertion is between dots, 2 moves cancel out)

10 minutes with Arnaud inverse solution:
inverse scramble: B U D' F B2 R' L2 B L2 D2 B' D2 R2 L F L' F2 U D2 B D2 R' F' U D
solve: L F' D' F.R' B2 R. U' B2 U2 R' U' R. L B L'.D' R' D L' D' R2 D' R' D2L B (27) (each dot means an F2L stage)

20 minutes at home solution:
L2 D B D' B' L' B2 U' L U'.U' B' D' B U B' D B .B' L R B' R' B U' R' U' R (25) (insertion between dots, 3 moves cancel)

No premoves are needed to understand these solutions

Johannes, recognizing LL processes saves a lot of time, see the team-FMC with Arnaud solution with a 10-move LL alg. This alg also is a 7 move LL alg with a corner insertion cancelling out 5 moves (7 + 8 -5 = 10). Recognizing the alg is much faster than insertion.

greetz ;)

Wow, funny story.

BTW, that 30 move solution I had literally took me 5 minutes. It was the first solution that I did for this scarmble. I was so surprised at how good it was. If only it had a better permutation than V (although that did cancel out 3 moves)

Thanks for writing all this Guus. Next time we will both just break the WR :)

And for all of you that are wondering how it is possible that I am pretty good at FMC but can't even do OLL, and PLL the answer is easy:
Almost all the algs I don't know are to long to use for fewest moves anyway. If you look at my solution for 2007-42, I use a total of 3 moves for the last layer so there is no need to learn all of those algs for FMC.

Knowing lots of algorithms can be very usefull however. At the Polish Open I found a 13 move F2L, but because I didn't know the OLL+PLL I had to try really hard to finish in 37 moves. Joel just did a regular OLL+PLL and finished in 35 moves (he didn't find the 13 moves F2L though :))

Guus has made a really smart choice once to pick all the short Last Layer algs (10 moves or less, about 80 in total) and learn them. I immediately dismissed the 16 move F2L because it gave a really bad last layer. I changed it to a 22 move F2L for what I thought was a much better one. It would have been so nice if Guus and I could do a team FMC. I suspect we could find <= 25 move solutions within the hour every time.

And Alex, that 37 moves would have made you the winner :)

And philkt37, you get an OLL skip including a cancellation in your F2l+PLL in 5 minutes and you are complaining that you would have like a better PLL. Some people are just never satisfied (which is a good thing)
