Eriol's training log

I have been a bit annoyed that my 3x3 times haven't really improved at all in the last two months while I've been learning full OLL. So today I made a serious attempt to beat my ao100 PB at 28.75. And I was so close for a long time and even equalled 28.75 twice in the process. But it didn't improve! It's still stuck there. So annoying! 😟

I was hoping that I could go to a competition next sunday, but apparently not. Too many other commitments next week. :(

Now I'm eyeing possibly travelling to my regional champs with full WCA program later in the autumn instead. Could be fun to try stuff like FMC and Megaminx for the first time. But in the end I might need to scrap that plan too, We'll see.

Embarrasing stuff happened this weekend. I let my five-year-old son scramble my Megaminx and then I was going to show my mom and sister how to solve it. And it was only after failing on last layer twice that I realised I had a corner twist...

I think I missed it because I do orientation of corners with U- and R-moves while having last layer on the L-side hidden behind my left hand. I have also never had a corner twist on Megaminx before and I honestly thought it was almost impossible to get one. But when I moved it back I realised they actually can twist quite easily.

On a more positive note, I had another 3:01 solve on 5x5 today, just 0.3 seconds from PB. And then also a 3:14 which is my third best ever. There's definitely potential for sub 3 although I still do quite a lot of 4 minute solves.

before learning full oll you might want to consider improving f2l, finger tricks, or cross. i feel like there is no need to learn it until sub 20

Too late. I already know all of them. :) Except I forget OLL 29 sometimes and I tend to mess up Nb-perm, but that's beside the point.

I started learning full OLL because:
1. At the time I didn't really know how to practice F2L in a structured way.
2. I needed some kind of easily measurable goal for this summer.

well, I hope that helps you improve!
good luck

Had a string of good 4x4 solves and got ao12 down to 1:38.94. No improvement on ao5 or best single though, but I've had a 1:23 and two 1:28 solves today.

So I registered for a two-day competition in November and booked the trip so I now have something to train for. I just need to decide what events to prioritize. These are the events I'm doing:

3x3: I haven't trained 3x3 much lately, but minimum is to refresh some of my OLL:s again. I really need to get better at F2L as well, but I'm not really sure if I want to prioritize it right now.
2x2: Don't think I will practice this more than absolute minimum. It would be fun to get like a sub-10 average, or at least a sub-10 single though.
4x4: I have already practiced this a lot since last competition and I will be very disappointed if I can't beat my PR single of 2:10.35. The boring part however is that the competition format is Bo2 / Ao5 with a 1:15 cut-off. At the moment my PB single at home is 1:22, so not very likely that I will do more than two solves.
5x5: For this event I will have plenty of time to get an average at the competition. I'm consistently in the 3 - 4 minute range and plan to practice it more. My PR single should be easy to beat for 5x5 too.
FMC: I'm just happy if I can get a result in this event. Did another practice solve recently ending with a basic 55 turn CFOP-solution. One of my biggest problems is actually writing down OLL:s and PLL:s that I have in muscle memory, but I will do a few more training runs and hope it will be enough.
3x3 OH: I have never really practice this and my goal is just to make the 3 minute time limit somehow.
Megaminx: Not sure how much I want to practice this. There is a 6 minute time limit so the minimum is just to make that. My at home PB right now is 5:34 so I will need to improve a bit to be sure.
Pyraminx: No goals for this. Will probably average around 20 seconds with the practice I have done so far.

3x3 OH: I have never really practice this and my goal is just to make the 3 minute time limit somehow.

Did a few OH-solves and realize that muscle memory is a big problem for this event too. I think I will have to do 2-look PLL and OLL for many cases to avoid not getting completely lost.

Did more 4x4 solves today and got ao100 down to 1:49.62. Also improved slightly on ao5 in the process, but only to 1:35.55. Many of my solves were in the 1:30-1:40 range today, but not a single sub-1:30. I'm definitely more consistent in my solving now, but I'm still waiting for that lucky single that will take me closer to the 1:15 barrier.

I have also been doing some Megaminx in the last few days. I'm nowhere near good at it, but I've had some improvement. Current single PB is 4:39.08. I decided to set some practice goals before I compete in the event:

1. Reach 100 recorded solves in cstimer. Currently I'm at 41.
2. Learn to do all beginner algs for last layer both clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Hopefully just doing more solves will help me get better at lookahead and F2L/S2L.

Finally got some more sub-1:30 solves on 4x4 today. Had several lucky solves in a row and improved all my records except single. Ao100 best is now 1:48.60, ao12 is 1:36.57 and ao5 all the way down to 1:26.95.

I feel like that first sub-1:20 solve is long overdue and could come anytime. Even had a 1:25-solve where I didn't see PLL-parity and had to do an extra U-perm at the end.
