I've known about this for ages but never really tried to do it. I don't know any other people who have customized their algorithms but it seems like it an save you some time and better suit the way you cube. For example, instead of doing a regular J-Perm:RU2R'U'RU2L'UR'U'L I modified it slightly and do R and L' first then do U2R'U'RU2L'UR'U'. It seems faster for me. But here is a really good example. Do this UR'U'RU'RU R U'R'U RU-R2 U'R'U. Then do it again to get a solved cube. Alright now instead of doing only U at the start do U2 and R'U'RU'RU R U'R'U RU-R2 U'R' It has the same effect only mirrored but it is slightly faster. I also do a mirrored J-Perm different then the usual(the J faces me instead of away like in the usual alg)

So I was wondering if anyone else has experimented with customizing your algs. If you have please tell me so I can check them out.

That's the basic idea. From one hand experience, you'll learn that triggers from the back and reverse triggers are faster, and do U turns at the beginning to avoid awkward ones at the end. Other than that, an alg is an alg.

Yeah, I was trying to group moves at the start with a move at the end so that at the end I wouldn't have to do a move that seemed out of place. I also am trying to do algs from different sides of the cube to see if it is faster for me. What is your experince with doing algs from a different position? Did you find it was faster or not?

I guess it is almost an natural thing to customize algs as you go. I have noticed now that a lot of the algs I originally learned I do differently. Practice, Practice, Practice.

I use the typical Z-perm (l U' R' U D R' D U' R' U R D2' x U), but I modified it so I do the U-face adjustment first, so now I use d l U' R' U D R' D U' R' U R D2'

The last-layer corner algorithm, R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2, I actually do somewhat like a l' U l' F2 x' l F' R' B2 R2.

I always do U adjustments before the alg, except for the 2x2x2.

I found that I customize algs by mirroring them so the start-state is easier for me to recognize. I cannot do mirroring on the fly, so this took me a while to do when first learning my set of algs.

I found that I customize algs by doing cube rotations that I never learned, but just feel better. This is done intuitively and helps a lot with one-handed and bigger cubes!
