Whenever I solve I usually use my inspection time not only to prepare for the cross but to see if there are any F2L pairs I can get ready for like most other speedcubers. One of the things I do during the actual cross step is try to preserve the position of edges/corners or pairs relative to their appropriate slot or each other(e.g. if they are two moves away from being paired up/inserted or are already paired up I try to preserve them). I know that lots of times you can do the extended cross in 8 moves but I find that, for me at least, it is faster [for me during inspection] to simply remember to preserve or insert one corner or one edge with the cross. This usually leads to an extra two moves from the usual 8 move cross but it sets me up for an easier F2L slot. Is it okay to average 10 moves doing this or should I keep it down to 8 moves(cross + preservation/insertion)? Sometimes this will even balloon up to thirteen moves or a little more if I try to work with two extra pieces.

Do you mean cross + first slot? If so then yes, it takes me more than 10 moves normally for cross + first slot(usually takes me an extra 6 - 8 moves + 8 moves for cross). When I do [cross + preservation] + 1st slot, altogether it takes me 12 or 14 moves to complete. So based on what you are saying this is good right?
