Hey everyone, a thought came to me a few days ago and I haven't seen much about it so I thought I would share.

Basically, I'm fairly lazy and I don't think I could actually sit down and learn all of OLL by just repeating algs. I've also heard recognition becomes a problem as well.

So, I've started using different algs (ie the non-standard ones) for orienting my edges. For example, yesterday I started doing F (R U R' U') (R U R' U') F' for perpendicular edges and R' U' R' F R F' U R for edges in a line (48 and 46 https://www.speedsolving.com/wiki/index.php/OLL). Initially I make sure to consciously identify what edges would need to be reoriented so that I would be solving the actual OLL case (also if it's easy, I flip my corners to get the proper case heh). Obviously this is not good for speed, but I feel like this could be a much more effective way to learn OLL. Repeating algs over and over is a drag for me, but now I'm technically grinding in the solves themselves and it's been pretty productive for me. Ofc I'm just starting out, but I'm hype to see how this turns out. ~~

This helped me a lot when I started learning OLL. From the title of your post, this might be exactly what you're looking for.

i do the same thing when i teach people how to do PLLs.

i teach adj swap as T perm and diag swap as Y perm, but then i tell people to practice executing new algs like J perm or E perm by using them to fix he corner swaps instead of the standard 2-look algs. very effective.
