Am I doing it Right?

Full CN isn't a big deal.

I've been testing xy2Neutrality for a few months. Sometimes I'll get a few great solves in a row thanks to a nice first block. Usable pairs are more common than if I was just y2Neutral (most Roux users). It's usually easy to make the second block but I sometimes struggle with the lookahead because I sometimes forget what colors I'm supposed to be looking for.

Doing 25 solves, I averaged my move count for the first block with xy2Neutrality compared to y2Neutrality; using the same scramble for both and all picking the first things I saw - just like a speedsolve. The difference was only 7.4 moves compared to 8.00 moves. Maybe it was a bad string of solves or I'm not very good, but I expected a greater difference.

Definitely.

The only advantage, for speed, I see with using non-matching blocks is having a good first block. But, that leads to thinking that xy2Neutrality is better for speed. Then that leads to, like you said, x2y2.

If you're interested in Roux, try it out. There's no harm in that. But be persistent with it--don't just go "blockbuilding is hard fk it" and quit. Things take time to learn.

Additionally, I am an utter fixed cross user. CN is nice to have, but in the end, it's about how one reacts and solves the cases they have, and their execution is the direct result of what they have learned. Plenty of cubers are not CN but are still sub-15. CN isn't necessary, nor does it make a huge difference in the long run.

Oh, and the "aka WR 3x3x3 holder" thing is ridiculous. He got the WR because he is skilled, not because of a completely open solving orientation.

I like partial neutrality for roux...I was sub-25 fridrich before I made the switch. I never did CN, and I'm doing fine right now with roux :)

idk man, sometimes I use it if there's a big chunk of the second block hanging around.

I actually meant completely non-matching (including R/R' blocks). Which I guess doesn't matter much since it's rare to see a last pair that would make an easy R/R' block.

But yeah, I do the same as long as I quickly see how to put those free blocks together.

Definitly Colour neutral before Roux, you will speed up fast that way
