Algorithmic or intuitive pattern-making?

Is there much difference between the two? I prefer making patterns intuitively since I can discover more patterns from it (my favourite is the checkerboard-flower-cross pattern). The H pattern is a good one to learn since you can make the cross and the flower from it. I really want to find an intuitive cube in a cube.
