I'm considering getting a square-1 pretty soon, but I am also interested in the 4 layer square-1. I would like to get both, but before I do, I'd like to know the difference between them. So can anyone tell me the difference between a 4 layer square-1 and a regular square-1, as far as how to solve them?

Solving a 4 layer square-1 is just like solving a regular square-1 twice. You first solve the outer layers just like a square-1, then solve the two inner layers just like a square-1. It's kind of weird to see the inner layers like a square-1, but you do the same moves, just with the inner slices. There is a case that sometimes comes up at the end where two of the center pieces are switched, but that's easy to fix.

You can't compete with a 4-layer one.

I prefer to solve the inners first, because it's somewhat harder to align them perfectly with the core, and I like to not care about the outer layer (though I solve both cubeshapes simultaneously). Probably the most difficult part is determining the "orientation" of the inner sq1's corners. Know your color scheme, that's all I'm saying.
