Hey all,

I'm Dave, from the UK, and 38 years old. Two years ago my kids got cubes from Santa Claus ... and I got stuck with "fixing" them. After getting bored of using online solvers to generate the solutions - I decided to learn the beginners method.

Some months ago, during the covid lockdown, I found some YouTube videos of speedcubing and it blew me away - so ordered a Moyu speed cube and set on my way to learn CFOP (4 look).

This week I ordered a Rubiks Connected - its amazing!

I wouldn't call myself a speed cube yet, but I'm here to earn the title - gotta get to a sub 20 average!

I'm following the algs from CubeSkills at the moment (but some from badmephisto too), I need to learn Nb, Ga, Gb, Gc, and Gd.

I think where im struggling now, is the recognition of patterns, to know what algs to apply

The main thing I look for is where blocks and headlights are in relations to each other. This is especially important for the G perms.

Welcome.

Badmephisto's algs maybe easy to learn but the website is pretty outdated and some of the algs are not that good.
Cubeskills or jperm.net might be useful

Nb - R' (U R U' R') F' U' F (R U R') (F R' F' R) U' R
Ga - (R2 U R' U) (R' U' R U') R2 (U' D) (R' U R) D'
Gb - D (R' U' R) (U D') (R2 U R' U) (R U' R U') R2
Gc - R2 F2 (R U2 R U2) R' F (R U R' U') R' F R2
Gd - (R U R') (U' D) (R2 U' R U') (R' U R' U) R2 D'

Hope these help

Oops I forgot:

Nb: r' D' F r U' r' F' D r2 U r' U' r' F r F'

Learn this one for Nb. It's the best one.
If it is hard then learn the one above but I'd recommend this one as it flows nicely.

welcome! Whats your avg right now?

Congrats. I'd suggest learn the G-Perms before the Nb-perm. They may seem intimidating, but they are easier than they look. Just break the steps down into easy memorization patterns. Also, just see where the 1x2 bar is. If it's on the right, you got Ga and Gb. If on the left, Gc and Gd for you. Good luck and good cubing!

I wouldn't say wannabe speedcuber, you are a speedcuber. I have a 2 minute solver friend who calls himself a speedcuber, so you can too. Good luck, I would recommend brody the cuber's and jperm's advanced f2l tutorials.

A little late reply, but welcome! I have a similar story, 35 year old dad that started because my son was given a 2x2 for Christmas. I got into that a bit but quickly graduated to a 3x3 and I have gotten down to a personal best of 13.0 and a pb AO12 of 16.6, though my overall average tends to be around 19-20. I use CFOP and 4LLL, with a couple PLL's sprinkled in.

It's definitely addicting! Also, once you learn beginners 4x4, you can basically solve any size cube with the same logic. I bought a 9x9 and solved it without any instructions using basically a glorified 4x4 method...it took me forever though.
