So I started seriously cubing in mid January, with about 1:30-2:00 on a Rubiks, and a few weeks after getting a speedcube I dropped my time down to under a minute, several weeks pass, under 50, little bit longer, then I'm sub 40, and now I consistently solve in an average under 40, usually averaging around mid to low 30s for an Ao5 and mid to high 30s for an Ao12. I started learning f2l after I broke the 50 sec barrier, and didn't really start using it in my speed solves until I was consistently in the 50s every time. Then I dropped to sub 40, and somewhere along that line I started learning the corner OLL algs and other PLL algs to learn 4LLL. Currently, there's only one corner OLL case that I don't know, and one corner PLL alg I don't know. So most of the time, unless I'm feeling lazy, I solve the whole cube in about 7-8 looks. Here's my time/ breakdown:

Cross: about 5-7 seconds
F2L: 14-22 seconds (sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes I'm not)
LL: usually 7-12 seconds

I average right around 70-80 moves per solve.

2x2: I use layer by layer method, solve the LL in two looks unless there's a corner switch perm, I don't know that one, and I usually solve in 8-12 seconds. Maybe 5-6s if I get a PLL skip.

So my question is, what would I need to do to get sub 25? And maybe sub 6 or 7 for 2x2? And how is my progress so far?

TL;DR:

2x2: layer by layer, 2LLL, 8.89 Ao5, 5.2 single
3x3: 4LLL, f2l in 14-22 seconds, cross in 5-7, 31.36 Ao5, 27.54 single (NL, I've gotten in the 27s like 4 other times)

70-80 moves even for CFOP is a little insane. Try using more efficient F2L pairing moves and insertions.

Also, your cross could use some major help. Try to get it under 3 or 4 seconds. This would require you to memo your cross in inspection so that you can look ahead. Your LL should be faster too. Learn all your PLLs and your 2-Look OLL and you'll be set for getting sub-25 at least.

Progress is fine.

Learn full PLL.

Get your F2L movecount down to around 35 moves (including cross).

For 25 seconds, you're looking at around 15 seconds for cross + f2l; 10 seconds for LL. So you're already there for LL, based on your stats in your post, but your cross + F2L is double what it should be. So I guess that's what you need to work on.

Try this thread.

Also, double-check your timings, as I'd be very surprised if you're really solving 4LLL in a maximum of 12 seconds.

You are coming along quicker than most people. For 3x3, i would work on your cross more and do some blind cross solves. Your F2L is pretty fast, but can always use improvement, do the same thing, just find an edge and a corner, and practice putting it in blind. This will increase your look-ahead. After you finish learning 2 look OLL and PLL and you get your averages down about to about 31-33 seconds, i would learn full PLL. For 2x2, a good thing to try would be Ortega, you will only need to learn 3 algorithms, but if you want to get your OLL on 2x2 faster, you could learn OLL algorithms specifically for 2x2 which will be much fewer move count.

UPDATE: I double checked my timing and looks like I was pretty accurate about the cross, F2L I average about 15-20, and LL is about 10-15. On average. If you total it up, it's about 32 to 42, and that's probably within one standard deviation of the mean.

What about my 2x2 (since now there's a thread out there):
First layer: 3-5 seconds
Second layer orientation: 4-6
Second layer finish: 4-6
I know all of it needs major improvement, but what sticks out most?

Since you're doing LBL, these times will improve naturally with your 3x3 times. I'd suggest that you do Ortega, it has the same number of steps, but you only need to build a side, and the algorithms are easy.
