The Discovery Science Center's birthday is coming up, and to celebrate they want to hold a giant party. The Center is marked by a giant cube visible from all around, and they have supported speedcubing competitions in the past. We've decided to go for it and try to make history: A Guinness World Record for "Most people solving a Rubik's Cube at once."

The beauty of it is that it isn't a competition. There is no pressure, and nobody cares how fast you are. It's just a chance to come by, hang out with a bunch of cubers, and have a great time.

The center is in Santa Ana, in Southern California. If you know anyone else who can solve (even if it's not fast at all) let them know. It will be held December 20.

Please register at http://www.discoverycube.org/programs.aspx?q=90 and let us know how many people we can expect! I hope to see you there!

o boy... another collision between cubers and GWR...

I am going to have to take tyson's side on this one and oppose this. People should still go, but they should not participate in this record until Guiness agrees to accept all WCA records as official, and place them in the Guinness Book.

last week I was in a bookshop and I saw the Guinness World Records Book 2009. The world record time of cubing in there was the time from Ron von Bruchem 9.55 seconds.. it's a bit late for 2009...

Tyson was the one who actually referred them to me. In any case, Ron's record isn't too old, especially since the book had to be finalized and printed before you could see it in the store.

Some history

Probably the biggest regional Cube-A-Thon qualification round took place at Six Flags on 3 Oct 1981, 2,000 contestants and 4,000 spectators watch four intensive rounds. Jeffrey Varansano won this event, with an U.S. record of 24.67 sec.

I am not sure how they will define solved the cube at the same time, but it would be hard to beat the 2000 cubers who solved the cube at the same time in 1981
