The Solve Critique Thread

Try to turn slower and more smoothly/less violently. Work on looking ahead and recognition, both of F2L pairs and LL algs. Do slow solves where you turn slowly enough that you never pause, then slowly raise your TPS. At this point turning fast just makes it harder for you to look ahead.

OK I will do so. Thanks!

hey, you've probably heard this a million times...but to me i think you just need to spend more time practising.. i think what's slowing you down is you take some time to recognise the patterns/cases thing remembering which alg to use.. also maybe learn some more finger tricks, this will help you rotate the cube slightly less.. oh and doing the cross on the bottom would help with your look-ahead :)

Hey guys,

I've been Speedcubing for about 2 months now, I'm currently using the CFOP method with 2-look oll and pll, although i only just learnt the e-perm alg before recording this video. Just thought i'd do an average of 10, so my mistakes can be highlighted.. There's loads of them, but hey i'm still practising so any tips are helpful. thanks guys :)

@Yuxuibbs Im now averaging at 17-19 seconds. I had a hard time being sub 20. Let me tell you what i did: i tried to get my f2l and cross done in under 12 seconds and oll and pll in 3 seconds. As easy as this, and you will be averaging 18 in no time with practice

Been around on the forum for a little bit but have yet to make an account until now so nice to meet you all.

I've been around the 25s average mark for about a month now and no matter how much I practice I just don't seem to be improving. I sort of know what can be improved, as in less pauses (looking ahead more) and just generally getting faster but I'm hoping you guys could give me some tips

I have uploaded a video and hopefully it will be shown below and you will be able to point out my faults :)

It look like a pretty big cube rotation.

First that cross... Cross should take about 2 secs it took you about 5 seconds. It's not to hard to get the cross within at least 3 secs, just work on doing the cross in at least 8 moves and practice it blindfolded.

Next F2L needs to be more fluent! And try to actually look ahead, just solve the cube slowly so you have no pauses. Be able to recognize your cases better, and even try looking at a F2L pair and doing it blindfolded. F2L just takes practice and try looking up example solves because you'll see some common cases that you might make really difficult to do but when really there are easier ways/shorter ways.

WATCH CUBE ROTATIONS... Don't do y2 or anything like that. (Even I do them sometimes Woops)

OLL and PLL are quiet choppy, take some time and relook at your finger tricks. And Learn the double flick with both hands, it helps a lot. Watch some faster cubers of there algs and fingertricks.
Do some drilling! And wouldn't be to bad to look into 2 sided Pll recognition.

Need Tips

I'm averaging around 15-16 seconds. I was hoping some of you could help me and give me advice on how to improve. I find that the speed on my last layer is lacking compared to my F2L. I use 2LOLL and full PLL. Thanks to everyone who helps me out!

19.64 ao5. I'm ~22-23 globally. I know full pll, half oll, and I'm color neutral. Thanks!
Not fluent and no look ahead during the F2L. Try to turn cube little bit slower with looking for other pieces. You waste a lot of time between solving the f2l pairs. Cross and transition to f2l isn't so bad. You should practice more a PLL recognition, for example 2-side PLL recognition would be good for you.

You have to learn solving cross in max 8 moves, fingertricks and reduce unnecessary moves during f2l. And learn all PLLs, they are not so difficult, watch some movies about them (to learn to execute them fast)
One of my better solves, I'm usually 30~33
Really bad angle. But I can see, that you are turning cube much too fast, and losing control of look ahead, turn much slower but focus not on the solving part, but on the unsolved. I can't tell more, because of this bad camera angle.

Been a week haven't gotten any advice, anyone?
Try to reduce regrips. Regrip to make algorithm much faster is fine, but too much regrips slow down your solve. Try to solve 2 slots on back of cube and left side, and on the end solve last one. It's much easier when you have unsolved f2l and with empty slots you can solve slots on back really fast without any regrips. Learn 2-side PLL recognition, you make sometimes unnecessary moves to fit PLL and then execute. Try to learn 2-side recognition, and AUF.
BTW. Look ahead, it's really easy to get sub9 f2l with really slow turning. Fast turning doesn't mean fast solving.

I understand with the 2-side PLL recognition but I'm not really understanding what you are talking about before that. Would you care to explain it better or more?

I'm sorry, I'm after gym and I'm dying.
-Cross - it's fine.
- F2L - When you keep cube in your hands with finished cross, you have (mostly) 4 free/unsolved slots. And now, focus: instead of solving slot which is front right (in front of you, on the right side, normal way to solve f2l pair), try to solve slots which are on the back (on back left and back right slots) of cube. You can use empty slots solving (shorter algs using a another empty slot.) It's better way than normal solving with solving pair on front right and then regrip, and another regrip other difficult mirrors. With this way I can easly solve f2l with 0-1 regrips. I'm sorry for my english, I have no idea how to explain it better. If you didn't get it, I'll make simple pictures for you.

Oh, okay. I gotcha, I understand it now.
Thanks. You're English is still pretty good, I could understand it fine just a few mistakes haha.

So, I'm kinda sub 20 nowadays.

The DNF was noobish, but the rest is decent. Any tips on what I should mainly focus on?

Lol, sorry to say but slow down and look ahead. :D And calm down! Like you lockup quite a bit.
Just like... turn slower but make sure it's more accurate turning.
That's the main stuff, it honesty does not take much to get sub-20 after you get that lookahead. Or well Sub-18 i'll say.

Mainly, solves are fine for now, just gotta slow down and be more accurate at turning and don't feel stressed. Look ahead.
