How do you guys keep track of what cubes you own?

I recently just got into speed cubing and purchased a ton of cubes. I wasn't smart enough to keep my boxes, so I have a bunch of Dayans and Moyus that look identical. What do you guys do to keep them differentiated?

Personally, I can just tell what cube is which. Some of mine have logos, some of them have different mods, some are lubed a little different. Lots of times I'll just pick the cube up and tell which one it is.

I am no where near that kind of expertise! I have a stickerless zhanchi and a stickerless GuHong V2. It is hard for me to tell the difference between them.

you joined in 2011 but just got into speedcubing?

Yea, joined != began. I was interested in it, but never got started. Bought a Lubix Guhong v1 back when Lubix only made one cube. I've played with it off and on, but never really tried to go for any speed, just had fun solving it.

I decided to actually try to speed cube now, so went out and invested in almost 1 of every cube. Now, I don't know which cube is which!

Thats why you don't buy your cubes all at once...
Would you rather have one big gift or many small gifts over a period of time?

Differentiating cubes wise - once you played each of them enough you'll be able to tell whats what. This also applies with new cubes/broken in ones.

I have five full-size black 3x3s, and can tell the difference between them easily by feel, but also by look. They are a Guhong, a Zhanchi, a HuanYing, a Weilong, and a Fangshi SR. I find putting different stickers on helps, but I just know which is which. I solve them all a fair bit, except the HuanYing, which I hate. I could tell you what stickers they've got on them without checking. I know, for example, that my Guhong has Cubesmith half-brights with a cubesmith logo, or that my Weilong has MoYu stickers except the red and orange, which have been replaced with Cubicle bright orange and fluro red.

I've never really thought about it before, but the cubes have been bought over a period of about a year, and they all kind of have a personality to me. I don't think I could ever confuse any of them, and if I did I'd realise my mistake as soon as I turned it!

Why would you buy a bunch of very similar cubes, i.e. a few Dayan/MoYu cubes? For me, the HuanYing and Fangshi were impulse buys, I don't really like them. In an ideal world, I'd have less black 3x3s, and don't intend to buy any more. For me, variety is the spice of life. Why not get different colour cubes, like white or milky, or different puzzles like pyra/mega/4x4/5x5...

Ask Marcel how he keeps track of his puzzles. At last count I think he had 3,241 3x3s. ;)

Why compromise with 1 big gift every once in a while or small gifts all the time when you can get big gifts all the time?!

I like collecting things (which explains the 150+ board games that I have,) so I went out and got a bunch of cubes at once.

I picked up 6 from a local guy from here just yesterday actually. I liked how all of them felt, but I figure that I needed more time with them all to know which my favorite would be. I have several of the same cubes, just in different colors. I gave white cubes a try.. and I don't really like them for some reason. I preferred stickerless, but they are not competition legal, and my wife doesn't like the way they look. So I actually have a stickerless Lubix GuHong V1 and a stickerless Lubix Zhanchi that I am replacing with black ones (already on order!) I have a white Shenshou 4x4 and a white Moyu Weilong that I replaced with black versions as well.

I also like to keep a set of cubes in my office and my favorite ones on every floor of the house so I don't have to run up and down 2 flights of stairs to find the cube I want!

I'm not skilled quite enough to tell the difference between certain ones, but I can tell between a Weilong and a Zhanchi, but not really between Zhanchi and Guhong (both are Lubix, however.)

I thought I didn't like Zhanchis at all, but they are growing on me. I thought I would like the GuHong the best, but then I discovered the Maru CX-3 and love the way it feels. Now, I am obsessed with my WeiLong. This all happened in the span of about 3 days!

I'm keeping most of them in boxes, so I only have about 7 rogue cubes right now, 2 of which are in my office. I can tell the difference between these now because they have different stickers or colors (white/black/stickerless.)

Current Collection:

Moyu Weilong (Black and White)
Moyu Huanying (Black)
Dayan Zhanchi (Stickerless with no mods, Lubix stickerless, Lubix Black 57mm and 55mm)
Dayan Zhanchi 2x2 (Lubix Black)
Dayan GuHong V1 (Black with 48pem by previous owner, Lubix Stickerless, and Lubix Fusion black)
Dayan GuHong V2 (Lubix Stickerless)
Dayan LingYun (Lubix V2 Black)
Maru CX-3 (Black)
MF8 Square-1 (Lubix Square 1 Black)
Shenshou 4x4 (2 Black, 1 White)
EastSheen 2x2 (Black)

Thanks everyone for your inputs!

I look at them. If I for some reason should be in doubt, I just lift them up, turns are rarely needed. In your case it might be a bit trickier, since you obviously have not had time to get to know your cubes well enough before getting a whole bunch more that you need to get to know.

Having a load of cubes you can't differenciate is probably a really good thing. It means you can pick your favorite without any pre judgement based on other people's reviews.

Yea, that was kind of the idea I was going for. I looked at all the reviews and bought the ones that people recommended. Everyone praises the zhanchi so much.. but I don't like it!

You should probably look at the inside of the cube. Or the cuts of the stickers. The Huanying would be hollow and the Weilong would be smooth. The Guhong would be clacky and smooth as the Zhanchi would be crisp and fast. You can make some logos or put something on there that can make you tell a difference. Just put them in an order or slam your head on a keyboard. It helps :)

You should put all white stickers on one cube, all yellow on another, all blue on another, all red, etc., etc..

Not only would this make it easy for you to tell your cubes apart, it would make you REALLY fast as well!

I put the clear Dayan logos which come with DIYs on different coloured centres.

Good idea! I am going to make custom logos that say exactly what they are and place them on the white side.

I just set a new record doing this. Ao100 = 0 seconds.
