colour neutral. is it worth it??

If you use Fridrich ,then its not worth being color neutral.

Color neutral only slows down your F2Ltimes.

I've been reading this thread and this post is a responce to a bunch of posts I've seen in this thread.

If solving any cross color means that your f2l/look ahead is slowed down, that means that you are not color neutral. I think a better question for this thread would be something along the lines of "is attempting color neutrality worth it" because it seems to me like many posts (including the first one) were not actually about the advantages/disadvantages of being color neural, but rather the advantages/disadvantages of attempting to be color neural.
Just my two cents

Lol, slowing down F2L times. By definition (and yes, it is by definition) there should be no qualitative difference between F2L speed on any colour.

EDIT: I used the word "qualitative" to make myself sound smarter, there isn't really any need for it :)

One step closer to team CN:

Average: 16.98 sec.
Individual Times: (19.55), 16.11, 14.06, (12.11), 14.52, 17.28, 17.11, 16.84, 19.28, 17.75, 17.47, 19.41

First ever sub17 average.

That's a very good point.

No one mentioned that in Petrus, the first step, color neutral and opposite colors are the same.
That's because it's not true.

I think we need a slight distinction here, between "doing" color-neutral solving -where you ignore specific colors- and "being" color-neutral -where you literally treat each color equivalently.
If you are trying to be color-neutral, but are still slightly slower on a certain color or are more likely to pick up a certain cross color first, you'd fall under the former. If you're Johannes, maybe the latter.

Every 2x2x2 block has one of either opposite colors. And opposite color solving doesn't need a center orientation of the cube.

But the familiarity with a certain color on the bottom will allow you to build an intuition of where each color is on the cube. Thus, faster F2L times.

You're making the assumption that you don't build that intuition being color neutral, no matter what the color on the bottom is. That's incorrect. I can slot in any corner, any color, without cube rotation.

I will concede that it takes longer to get that intuition if you're color neutral, but that's not the point of discussion here.

(17.36) 14.58 14.03 14.38 16.55 (12.87) 13.73 16.07 16.51 14.10 14.30 13.92 => 14.82

First time I've taken a 'serious' colour neutral average.

You really didn't read what I said did you? There should be no difference if you are colour neutral, at all!

dene is right. the definition of colour neutral is someone for whom the colour of the cross or first 2x2x3 block or whatever does NOT MATTER. and :. makes no difference to recognition times for them, only cross move count, and likelihood of an x-cross.
BECOMING colour neutral obviously puts you at a disadvantage for a while, until it makes no difference. i would imagine colour neutrality practice might be aided by lots of 2x2 solves (no reason not to be colour neutral there).
hope this helps somewhat.

IF you are using Petrus, why shouldnt you be colour neutral? because you are'nt pairing up the edges like Fridich, and what I find with single colour in Fridich is that you can pick out the edge-corner pair faster. I also tend to get confused if I try and go colour neutral; I sometimes have to stop and think what colour is on the top and is colour a opposite colour b, and such. Also I find that, especially in low light, I get some colours mixed up :p

Edit: My friend who has been cubing for two years now is colour neutral too :P. Im not exactly sure what method he uses, he goes blazing fast, his record is 10.49 seconds, which he said he set on a Sunday contest awhile ago, and he averages 15.

I think yellow white colr neutrality is enough for Petrus myself. Remember yellow white on Petrus means that you can make any combination or 2x2x2's =]. I just then expand into 2x2x3 into the white or yellow, depending on which color is contained in my first block. Now if I was going for WR or something, and I needed the second or two, sure, but as far as I am now, not needed.
