i am a relatively new cuber to the society with with about 4-5 months of experience. i like this forum a lot and have read a lot about erik akkersdijk and his legendary 7.08 which went uncontested for nearly 2 years. i recently checked hiis wca id and was fascinated by his accomplishments. nut i noted one thing- that he had not been to a competition since 2010! why is that so?
i noted the same with dan cohen too. they are both really fast cubers, i would love to see them both cube again.
why did they leave cubing?
i tried the search function but didnt get anything.
and please dont move it to some other place as i expect getting answers lik you're dumb or that i dont ought to cube if i dont know this.
thanks in advance.

They haven't left cubing at all, and they are still competing regularly. If you are looking at the WCA ID pages, then those competitions would have been the last time they got WR/CR or other records. To see the competitions they have been to recently, scroll down to a result section for an event, and you will see the competitions listed there. I recommend looking at 3x3 since its held as most competitions.

Hi! Welcome to the forums.Erik Akkersdijk has gone to a number of competitions from 2010.His last cube competition was 1 AVG 2013.The case is the same with Dan Cohen. His last cube competition was CSP Spring 2013. Go and check it now. :)

I don't know what you're looking at, but Erik's been to 5 comps this year.

Anyway, it's pretty normal for people to stop cubing at a certain point.

i know, but look at people like faz and mats! erik should take tips from them, i guess.
ps- maybe erik lost his insane cubing interest cause of girls

What about faz? Where could I ask mats?

From what I've seen, faz's practices varies a lot. It would be from a few minutes to a few hours of practice in day.
Mats said that while he used to practice for maybe a couple of hours a day, his practice time is much lower now. ~Half an hour.

This shows once again that it's more about how you practice and what practice, rather than how many solves you do or how much time you spend solving. But if you have the free time to do more averages, go for it!

I don't see how this proves that how much you practice isn't as important as how you practice. That's how much they practice NOW. Once you achieve a certain skill level it takes much less work to retain those skills then it does to originally achieve them. Mats used to practice 2 hours a day. That's a lot of time spent with a cube in his hands, plus he's been at it for years now. I know professional musicians that practice less than that. I completely agree that practicing smart is very important. But practicing smart will never replace the thousands of hours of work necessary to reach an elite level at anything.
