Is it time for me to ditch the beginner's method?

somerandomkidmikes point was that it was really stupid. so actually you couldnt AGREE more :)

i think intuitive f2l is the way to go. learning so many algs is ridiculous. it makes fridrich seem like a massive and daunting system, when it needn't be.
i would just watch the various tutorials on youtube (mostly mephistos), and try and find other people who cube and see what they do for various cases.
personally, i think the flexibility i get from doing everything intuitively gives me an advantage from simply having machined responses to cases. it means that i can use lookahead more effectively - e.g where using keyhole would make the next case easier, or using a multislot technique to make the next case easier. i might use another type of insertion to get LL control... there are just so many advantages...

For the Fridrich method if you just learn all the PLL algorithms, and OLL algorithms before you have learned F2L,

Sheesh... i can't disagree more...
As to the people that disagree with me, I'm averaging sub-30 and I know half the PLLs. I use a 4LLL. Sub-25 is definitely possible with 4LLL. 3LLL is completely unnecessary at sup-1 minute times. Completely.

been practicing and got 4 seconds off my average of 12, down to 62 now.

didn't think this thread would get so much response, thanks everyone.

I'm not going back to the beginners method at all now, I can see how much faster this is with way less moves. Just gotta get my head round it and cut down those mental blocks that slow me down.

for some reason I find that the 'white on top' case is faster for me to recognise and execute.

yay, I just done an average of 12 - 55.38, which is 7 seconds faster than the other day.

I'm slotting the f2l pairs in at the back without even thinking about it now, suddenly it just clicked into place. I've learnt some more PLLs too. up to 11 now.

Nice. Keep doing F2L. It will be hard to not go back to the beginner method which seems faster, but it will all come together and pay off. Good luck.

beginner's method seems boring now, it's the same every time. I'm not going back.

update - first average of 12 of the day, no warm up, - 51.78, not a single solve over a minute. I'm really pleased with this.

I think I've worked out another problem. I need to get better at cross. The only reason I managed to get that average is that I removed the inspection time limit. I think by doing this, it will help in my cross building.

on the top. I know I should do it at the bottom, but I get confused.

it just seems to take me longer when there are a lot of bad edges. I'm trying to do the thing where you get them to the white side and adjust the face after to line them up (instead of orienting them all correctly one by one)

You have to get used to it. Everybody finds it hard switching from solving the cross on the top to solving it on the bottom. Practice it A LOT and it will be worth it.

It's tough at first, but you have to do it. I stayed with cross on top until i was averaging 30 seconds and i regretted it because moving from cross on top to cross on bottom so far in took me ages. It was so difficult to get the hang of it. I think it took me about 3 weeks!

tried with cross on bottom, first solve 46.30. I'm gonna try to get used to this early then. It sounds like it will be really hard if I leave it too long.

EDIT - OMG, I just got a 30.83 !! this cross on the bottom business is cool, I actually find it much easier immediately.

average of 12 with cross on bottom - 53.00 seconds. even faster than on top.

Thank you so much guys.

@cookingfat, try to refrain from using err... "religious interjections", if you know what I mean ;) Some people here may not like it, yeah. That aside, you're a rare breed - most people just get thrown off their rhythm/senses and take quite a while to improve when they switch to cross on bottom from what I've read, but... I'd never know :p Because I never learned to solve the cross on top :)

sorry, I didn't mean any offense.

yesterday, I might have got lucky. Today I'm struggling with cross on bottom, but I'm not changing back. If this will help me in the long run, I'm going to get used to it now.

good for you....I am averaging around 30 secs now and still cross on top...each time I try a cross on bottom and end up forming the cross with wrong colours...around 20% chance of forming wrong cross:( really regreted...should have started cross on bottom when I was still a beginner...

I'm still improving the fridrich f2l and cross on bottom, I never solve with beginners any more and never with cross on top.

I can pretty much do every solve under a minute now, averaging about 50-55 seconds.

I've tried out using a metronome and it kinda helps with the first 2 steps, I might do this some more. And I think I need to learn some more PLLs too.

yay, I tried to really force myself to do cross on bottom yesterday night.. and now my cross on bottom average is just like 1 sec or less slower than my cross on top, and broke my single solve record 3 times after changed to cross on bottom ^_^

Nice one dude. bottom cross feels completely normal for me now. I've tried solving with a metronome and it helped a little. I just did an average of 12 - 47.58. Getting better.

edit - next attempt - 46.41, I'm also getting more consistent too.

I also only need to learn the G and N PLL perms now.
