Just a quick intro. My name's Matt, age 30, and I live in upstate NY. Trying to solve the Rubik's cube never really crossed my mind until I saw a video of Feliks on YouTube and got me interested. As it happens, I have a pretty mindless job, with enough downtime I have to occupy my brain somehow, so I bought a Rubik's cube at Target, and commenced practicing.

The beginner's method was easier to learn than I expected, but the amount of info on this site is a little intimidating, and I haven't delved into anything else yet. I now have a ghost hand cube that is much faster, but hard for me to control (even though I did take it apart and tighten up a little) and I also have a lanlan 2x2 that I like a lot. I have a 4x4 on the way as well, for something else to try.

Did I say this was going to be a quick intro? I lied. I'm also interested in literature, writing, and skepticism/freethought. And I'm a runner. My next race is the Lake George half marathon :tu

Hi and welcome! I hope you will enjoy the forum and cubing. What 4x4 did you get?

emolover: Haha, this was the second time you posted during the time I was writing. :P

Hey Matt! My name is Steven. I have been cubing for around 8 years. I live around 7 minutes from Lake George! What part of upstate do you live in?

Thanks for the welcomes!
@cubinawsumness - I'm just using the beginner's method, and I'm around 2:30-3:00, assuming no major screw-ups.
@Sahid Velji - Thanks, I'll check those out
@emolover - I'm more of a jogger, really. I'm hoping to break 2:20 in the half marathon.
@meshuggahX - It's a LanLan 4x4
@sjbrundage - Hi neighbor! I live right near downtown Saratoga Springs

coolio. You'll get much faster (sub 1 min) very soon. A few minutes --> a minute is a pretty easy jump. Just keep doing solves, and things will start clicking in your mind.

Hey! I have a lanlan too, but I really don't like it very much :( locks up a lot. Not exactly motivating me to try harder at 4x4. I only get like 4-5 mins after a couple months, and maybe only do a solve or 2 a day. I reallly want a shengshou.

Hello. New here as well. I just did my intro a few days ago. I have a LanLan 4x4 as well and I really like it. It was slick but it did lock up so I sanded the life out of it internally to try and get it to corner more like a Da Yan. It does not lock up anymore but is a little bitty bit more prone to popping. Overall it's good now.

Enjoy the 4x4. There is so much to learn on it: 3 parity cases and knowledge of where the colors are supped to be in relation to each-other. It's a very satisfying solve.

Interesting. My lanlan 2x2 is my favorite as far as feel, so I thought the 4x4 would be good. The 2x2 is easy enough to control that I managed a solve with just my left hand. I'm definitely interested in one-hand cubing. I did a one-handed solve with the Ghost Hand as well, but it's just a little too big to control easily.

The 2x2 is great! I love it too! But the feel of the 4x4 is completely different. The 2x2 is not that fast, and very smooth, but the 4x4 feels very very fast (can easily do a U2 with one flick), and it kind of feels clunky, not in a bad way, and definitely not smooth. I love the feel, but the corner cutting is maybe one cubie normal, and virtually nonexistent for reverse corner cutting. This combination of speed (and just a bit difficult to control) and bad corner cutting just causes too many lockups for my taste.
