Your thoughts on the new Private forum?

That thread's a collective formation of a tutorial.
Once it's done, it'll be published appropriately.
Yes, but won't the tutorial be a lot better if people can ask questions if they are confused?

The "noise" can be easily taken care of by adding the relevant material to the OP and leaving the questions in the replies.

I've read Weston's last "long" post. I actually totally agree with it. Responding to Patrick's comment, you said "we'll see how it goes." I sure hope that "we'll see" before it's too late. This is as in, irreversible.

One thing I'm noticing is how people assume "noobs" as someone like this.

Indeed, they may have not cubed for very long, but why be so harsh on them.
Note: I'm not directly pointing this to someone. This is just something I tend to see from people in general. Just keep that in mind.

I think you're mixing up newbie and noob.

To address the issue of new people not being able to contribute in that forum (if it hasn't already been said), if they have an idea that they're sure is helpful to the topic they can just message a mod/a member inside that forum and ask that person to post on his/her behalf.

I sense a lot of "noobs" spamming their inbox. That wouldn't work out too well. Mods are already super frustrated, I can only imagine how much worse it could be. :P

That's true, but it doesn't have to be a mod. There are quite a few people inside that forum that can help. New person A can message a person who is very knowledgeable regarding that topic for his/her input, or A can just message the thread starter.

I see what your saying. Let me give an example though.
What if a bunch of people have a thread/topic/question about BLD. Who are the first people to pop up in your head about that topic? Mike and Chris. I can see a bunch of people messaging them about it.
Also, same with Faz and TPS.

...If you have a problem with that, keep it to yourself...

I do have a problem with that, and I'm certainly not keeping it to myself. A "private forum" defeats the purpose of forums. Entirely. If you struggle to comprehend that, let me Google-Dictionary it for you:

"A medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged."

And they're still being exchanged
It's just that there's a VIP section in this club brah

No need to get so up about it guys. If it can't work the way they want it, it'll die; until then, let the people who earn it have their fun :D

We tried that already. It's called the rest of the forum.

Anyhoo, I love it. Like I said, the topic that got made today would've been raped if it was public.

That's cause you're in it, nobhead.

The point of it is that only certain people can post...

I think he knows that.

My opinion, since it counts just as much as anyone else's, is that its just another favoritist way of controlling the forum.

I bloody hate the way these forums are run. And yes, I'll probably get an infraction or get banned for this but idc.

I have mixed feelings on the matter. I think it would be better if some of the threads in that private forum were initially hidden from the rest of the community. At least until they actually represent something useful. I wouldn't be all too keen on reading the thought chains of a "think tank". I'd be more interested in the final product. But then again, how good will the "final product" be when the input of the majority of our members didn't see the light of day?

And whoever thought that the rest of us would be unleashed by the introduction of this new "low noise" zone will be disappointed. Plenty of post deleting going on yesterday regardless ;)

I just read the whole thread, and I found Weston's ideas particularly interesting. It is a danger that the private forum becomes "the place to post" and that none of its members care about the regular forum anymore, which would just host a pile of rubbish threads. But I feel that this is also a matter of personal motivation from the private members : sure it would be easy to fall into that scheme, but if they are aware of it and pay a little attention (keep reading and answering regular threads as well) I don't see why it can't be just fine.
As for new members not being allowed in because they can't prove their value on the bad threads, I think this can be easily avoided if they can apply through a form. I don't think post-count and participation on the forum should matter so much for the form, as they are new and obviously didn't post a lot, but it could be some kind of "motivational letter". That way they can show what they are worth and be allowed in the private section although they are new.
This might also make the separation between the "good" and "bad" thread worse, as those interesting-people-but-not-in-the-private-section-yet might have helped keeping the good thread level up in the public section.

anyway... Except for those problems that have been pointed out, I think it's a good idea. One of the reasons I almost never post anything is that I find it pointless : most discussions don't interest me that much ("would you stop cubing for a girl ?", "Look a new crazy good F-perm... ah, no it's already well known", "hey, I'm selling my cubes !") and I don't want to add some more random blablablabla on top of that.
So I'm actually really curious to see how that private section will evolve and I'm looking forward to read some more constructive thread !

It's not just new members, its anyone who isn't considered "pro"

I based my post on the hypothesis that the private forum had been up for a while and the "selection" had already been made.
For now, just wait until they make up that form and when it is available send it to them if you feel you should be allowed to participate. (It's not like they didn't repeat then thousand times already that the list was still going to change and be increased... hum !)

And I don't think you need to be a "pro" to be admitted in, but the fact is : most people who post interesting and constructive things know a lot about cubing, those who post "rubbish" are the ones that don't and therefore just post anything to see their post-count increase.
Based on that... yes, most people that are going to be on the list are more experienced people, I don't see a problem with that.

edit : when I say "pro" I mean knowledgeable-pro, not that they're sub-10 on avg

You can be crazy fast at solving without knowing the majority of the stuff that is likely to get discussed there. I think the rest of us, with or without butthurt, should just carry on doing what we love; solving and enjoying the forum. The whole puzzle theory thing that the private forum seems to be geared towards is only part of the whole experience, you can still enjoy the game even if you aren't allowed to play with the big boys(and girls)...

Don't think so, I'm not "pro" in anything...
And I've been known to post pretty useless stuff too... (and will keep posting, just not in the other section)
And I do not personally know the other private members

But:
I have shown over time that I can have decent conversations and post constructive stuff.
That's the stuff that matters.

As I see it (not that I have any "power" in the selection proces):
You will not be excluded for useless posts in the regular forums, you will be included for useful posts.
