Guimond-step 2 help!

Hi, I have decided to learn Guimond for 2x2. I need help with step 2, when you separate the colors. Is it possible to recognize which case you have without turning the cube to look at the bottom layer, which I think is a waste of time? How do you do it? Thanks!

isn't it that you have to align U/D layers before executing one of the 3 possible algorithms ?
and if those two layers need to be aligned then I guess you have to look anyway :confused:
