My 2x2 average is 7-10 seconds currently using Ortega. Some of my algs aren't the best in the world, but even when I get a solve with both an OLL and a PBL that I can execute quickly, my times are rarely below 6. Part of my problem is recognizing the PBL case. I would estimate that typical PBL recognition for me is between 2-3 seconds and often is 4-5. I have to view the cube from the top and tilt it in all four directions to see the F/R/B/L faces to recognize the case. Are there any tips/is it possible to recognize PBL cases by viewing only the L/F/R faces?

When I inspect I always rotate my cube or solve the first layer from a certain angle so that if there is a bar it will always be at the back. Then all I have to recognize is the top layer permutation.

Know your OLL algorithms & slow down toward the end so you can see what the top case will be, or get good at inspection. Figuring the bottom layer during inspection is obvious.

Haven't been able to do this thus far. Rarely can I even predict what the OLL will be during inspection. :(

Edit:
My bad about double post... wasn't paying attention.

I think the first layer recognition is easier than OLL. A good way to practice using your inspection is 2x2x2 BLD.

just use two faces, seeing whether the two stickers on each face are opposite, adjacent, or matching.

for each layer-

matching-matching = hopefully nobody is dumb enough to warrant explaining this.
matching-adj = 1bar, obviously
adj-opp = 1 bar located across from the opp face
opp-opp= nobar.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you!

i use this trick . The ortega's first step is the side .While solving the side i look whether there is a block or an opposite switch or something.this will give you an idea of the case you are going to get.you may get 1 of the 2 cases through this prediction.
