I've found several websites that have a step-by-step guide to solving with the corners first approach. They all say the same thing for step #1...

You should be able to manage this on your own. Don't worry about positions--all corners will be permuted in step 3. You should be able to orient U corners in 6 moves or less. For the greatest speed and efficiency, try to do this in one look.

6 moves or less!

It takes me twice that - no matter how long I sit and think about it. Can anyone help me with this? I'm not very bright when it comes to this stuff. I feel like, if I saw some examples or something, I'd be able to do it; but as it is - I can't :(

Ok, for ortega, you only need to have fix the faces of the corners, and dont worry about permutation yet, so its really easy. But with this, people normally assume that you are being color neutral and start with the easiest side. You will pretty much always have 1 side where there are at least 2 pieces already in position. So this means that you generally only need to orient 1-2 pieces.
If you have to do 2 pieces, try to find ways to do them at the same time rather than individually.
Also consider this case: (setup with R2 U R2 U')
Probably the most intuitive way to solve this one is R U2 R' U' R U R' (at least thats the way I did it for a while.) But, a much better way to solve it is just U R2 U' R2

(im assuming you are orienting the pieces on the bottom side)

Thanks - that actually helped a lot.
