I think my hardware starts to slow me down.

What's the problem with getting a DIY now?

Reading the other posts, I think people are making up that you should be a certain speed before getting a better cube.

Getting a better cube isn't like learning a harder method. While you want to completely learn the old method before moving on (LBL before Fridrich etc), what cube you use will improve most peoples times even if just by a little bit.

I have to say I absolutely agree with Chris. Cubes aren't particularly expensive, and in my experience it takes some time to find the perfect cube and the perfect setup. I bought my first non-cheap-o cube way back before I broke sub-minute. It was a puzl.co.uk speedcube. At the time I thought it was godly, but quickly moved on to try out a huge number of different brands - and glad I did. I'm now on a well broken in Type-C (with C4U core+springs). Even though I'm quite happy with my current setup, I still have a CII, and Haiyan waiting in the post..

Cubes are like algorithms, it takes a fair amount of experimentation to find the perfect one. ;)

You should clean out your cube. Wash the cubies in water and a mild soap. You don't want to get water on the core, but You should clean that as best you can. I've never used anything other than a rubik's, but I've also never had a problem with them.

It isn't your cube's fault.

First, yes, you should work on turning accuracy. When you move up to a better cube, you can sacrifice that for speed and durability, and you combined with your cube will be that much better.
Sometimes, you will have to tough it out. Your cube will love you or hate you. I know that with the right combination of lubrication and sanding I got a godly storebought cube-so good, that I finally got sub-20 average of 12 with it, and I can probably sub-15 with it as well in the future.

This whole "you shouldn't get a DIY unless you are sub20" or "I got my first DIY after I set the new WR" stuff bothers me a lot. I got a couple of DIYs when I was sup60, yeah, sup60.
I thought it was cool to have "profesional cubes" at that time. And even if they didn't improve my times at all, they still made me feel good and made me practise more and more.

So yeah, get your DIYs whenever you feel like getting a DIY! ;)

I don't think there is some magical time barrier that after you reach it, you're allowed to have a DIY. You can buy a DIY whenever you want.

BUT the point that I want to make is that you're not going to become significantly faster because you got an amazing cube, unless your initial cube felt like it was filled with sand.

People tend to blame the cube for their lack of speed, but in all honesty, it's usually the cuber.

I think the reason people say to hold off on buying a DIY is because most people who are sup 1 will think that buying a DIY will reduce their times significantly. I know I did when I got my first DIY and I was super disappointed when my times only went from 25 seconds to 24 seconds.

its hard NOT to get a cube. The first thing you usually hear from cubers is "ditch your storebought cube"

Storeboughts are godly though! You can make a storebought suitable for any type of speedcubing, and for almost any turning style.

My storebought has reached its limit, and i dont want to mod it because its my only one.

I own a Rubik's storebought since it's difficult for me to get any other cube.

I've been playing with it for a long time, I sanded the edges and it turned out a good cube in my opinion (the opinion of a guy who has never touched another cube :)).

But now, I'm averaging the middle 30s and I feel like my cube is not responding as well as before. Maybe it is because it's not very fast, it doesn't cut corners and it locks up A LOT.

My question is: should I work in my turning accuracy rather than blame the cube?, or should I try my best to get and buy a better cube because he's slowing me down?.

I would go ahead and buy another cube just for the fun of it! Buy a Diansheng cube off of cube4you or some DIY off of popbuying.com for cheap and give it a shot
