From deep inside another thread:

when I refer to the 'core', I am following the standard terminology on this forum. ('core' = core + springs/screws + centers)
What?! Is that really standard terminology here? That'd be rather stupid. Illogical and confusing, and certainly better words exist? I don't have a name for it cause I have no need for it, but "frame" or "skeleton" come to mind...

Yes, Although I wouldn't use such harsh words as "stupid, illogical or confusing", I agree that it is not good terminology. That is why I felt I had to make a note explaining my choice of words.

However, on this forum, especially in the threads discussing hybrids, most people say things like "C4U core with type C cubies for teh win!!1!".

Maybe I don't read this forum as much as you, but it seems that the majority of people here say "core" when they really should say "core, springs and centers".

Thanks for the clarification. And no, when it comes to hybrids, you most certainly have read more than me.

Anyway... if core = core+springs+centers is truly standard usage here, I hope everyone can see why that is really illogical and confusing. Saying A=A+B+C is just... argh! Whenever I saw someone say "this core is awesome" I thought "WTF it's not touching anything but the centers, how can it matter much if at all?!?". Now I suspect they abused the word "core" like mentioned above.

Outside of hybrids, I see no need need to refer to core+springs+centers and quite frankly I wouldn't be surprised if indeed it was the hybrid guys who came up with such deformed terminology. And I can see it contaminating other areas so I'd like to clear this up and ask them to not misuse the word "core" like that anymore. We should have a wiki page about this hardware terminology, here are a few suggestions:

----------------------

Piece: A single piece of a puzzle, usage depends on the context. For example in solving a 3x3x3, usually only the 8 corners and 12 edges are considered. When listing the contents of a DIY set, one might include the core, screws, springs, washers and caps. Often we omit "piece" and for example say "edge" rather than "edge piece".

Corner: Corner piece of a puzzle, usually has three sticker sides but can have more. Examples: The 3x3x3 has 8 corners, the megaminx has 20.

Edge: Edge piece of a puzzle, has two sticker sides. Examples: The 3x3x3 has 12 edges, the megaminx has 30.

Center: Center piece of a puzzle, has one sticker side and is inside of a layer surrounded by edges and corners. Examples: The 3x3x3 has 6 centers, the megaminx has 12, the 5x5x5 has 54 (nine on each side).

Core: The central piece inside a puzzle, usually not visible. Examples: The 3x3x3 core is the thing with six holes for the screws, the Rubik 4x4x4 core is that ball with those eight round triangles, the void cube kinda of doesn't have a core.

Tip: Usually refers to an add-on thing that just rotates in place. Example: The pyraminx has 4 tips.

Frame: Single piece or combination of pieces that make up a basic frame of a puzzle in which the other pieces can be moved around. Examples: The 3x3x3 frame is its core and centers (including screws & co), and the edges and corners move around in it. The Rubik 4x4x4 frame is just its core, the void cube frame is made up of those inside pieces that don't move around when making outer layer turns, and the holey megaminx frame is that alien ball with holes and arms.

Fittings: Screws, springs, washers, ball-bearings, etc.

On the wiki page, the written examples would better be amended by pictures.

Thank you Stefan, I think it is finally time that we get a consensus about terminology. I always hated people saying core when they meant core+screws+centers.

I think Frame is a good word to use. Maybe we should put this in the wiki

Erik's famous cube is not a rubiks.com DIY core and Type B cubies!
Searching for "frame" on this site already brings a few results. I think it should be standard.
