Lyon Winter Open 2007 Results

I agree about the crying part. Some of those results were terrible. Lars even got a > 20 average on 3x3x3? And if I had been there I could have won Magic and maybe 5x5x5, which would have been crazy with Clement and Lars being there!

Did everyone "forget" to sleep the night before the competition, was the heat broken, did everyone keep popping, or....?

Nice results on 3x3x3 by Eduard Chambon though.

In the morning, it was very very cold in the room, and we had nothing to really heat it up. That explains the morning's results.

At each 15sec, I was feeling like doing 12 seconds, only the fingers could not go faster. I think it was the same for Lars, and for everyone !

Thanks for explaining Edouard. I had the opposite experience at the Italian Open 2007 this year. It was so hot that everyone was really sweating which didn't help the times (especially 3x3x3_oh) and made (multi-)blindfolded especially hard.

Again, sorry for not coming, but the trains from The Netherlands to Lyon go through Paris and those were all fully booked (probably because of Euro Disney)

Sorry, but I don't see where are all those bad results.
For the 3x3 first round, the cold can explain the bad results.
Except for that, Lars did a bit worse than his current level (4x4 and 5x5), but I did my personal best on the 5x5 with a brand new eastsheen, we had a NR at the 2x2, one new very good french blindfold cuber and some very good results at the megaminx.

As for the magic and master magic, you know that results can be a little random, and for the clock we had only one for three and it was a very bad one.

Honestly, I see in this competition a new generation of french cubers, and I hope we will see them at the EC in the higher part of the ranking :)

Clément

Yeah... I didn't mean this competition was a regret, because, as you told it, Clément, we saw some new french cubists.
For example look at Irene's results. She's 14 (I think) years old and averaged sub20.
For sure, this new generation will be faster than we are... And they will show us when we have to stop, Clément. :-)

I second Clément's and Eduoard's remarks and I also have to add that it was a very nice bunch of people to hang out with and we had a great deal of fun.

I have to admit that I was suffering all day. Partly this was due to the cold and both my cubes and me are very sensitive to that. This combined with the fact that I'm making big changes to my method and wasn't prepared right for a competition explains the somewhat mediocre results.

But I don't mind receiving a lesson in modesty from time to time. That Eduoard was able to get a sub-13 second average under those circumstances proves what a good cubing technique he has and he gets my respect for that.

Lars

I agree, that the new generations will be very fast, but it is up to the older generations to work on the METHODS more than the SPEED. Children would find it a lot harder to be original, and would find it easier to just work on Fridrich or some other method, and just get it fast, while all you old people can work on ZB, find ways of getting that faster, work on new methods, and so when the younger generations get older, they can take over, and the new young ones can get faster and on it goes :)

Well, we agree on the 3x3x3 first round having bad results. And we didn't know about the cold before. About the rest:

There were 10 Events.
Rubiks Cube (3x3x3): This was a good result. 12.88 is 12th place ever.
4x4x4 Cube 1:12.87. Not even in the top 100
5x5x5 Cube 2:25.10. Not even in the top 100
2x2x2 Cube 6.28. Indeed, not bad. 66th place ever.
3x3x3 blindfolded . Not even in the top 100 (but that is dominated by a couple of Americans) so I give this a "not bad".
3x3x3 one-handed 28.06. Not even in the top 100
Rubik's Magic 2.34. Not even in the top 100.
Rubik's Master Magic 4.89. Not even in the top 100.
Megaminx 2:02.70. Very good 19th place ever. Considering Erik and Stefan this is a big surprise.
Rubik's Clock 17.75. 76th place ever. Not good if you consider Lars's PB of sub 13.

So in conclusion, most winning results were not very good. That is surprising for a tournament in France where so many good cubers live.

A lot of this can be explained by
* Many French cubers not coming
* Cold start
* Bad clock
* Screw-ups on Magics.

And if you consider all that the results are pretty good. And competitions are about fun too, not just about results. It certainly sounds like you had a lot of fun.

P.S. Sorry for that Eduard thing. I wrote it correctly the second time.

Just a detail for Lars and Arnaud :
It's "Edouard" !

Oh damn! And I was almost going to mention the fact that I managed to practice and improve my French a bit over the last weekend. Another lesson in modesty...

For sure you improved your French... You had not the choice :-)
You can't spell a foreign name without learning how to spell it by heart (most of the time you just learn by seeing it !).
If you write Edouard, in French it sounds like A-do-r in english, that's the right orthograph.
Eduard or Eduoard would be prononced differently.
Eduoard = A-du-o-r (in english)
Eduard = A-du-r

Sorry Arnaud, but where did you see that French people are good at side events ?
When you say that many good cubers live in France, you mean 3x3 good cubers (also OH and 4x4). The only other good French person is Frederick at the 5x5 (well, you can mention Gilles at the FMC). But else, nobody is interested in side events.

A proof of that : 2 weeks ago, I was holding 12 NR, and I didn't practice any of those puzzles except in competition (I don't even have a clock, a pyraminx or a megaminx).

So I consider that a 5.99 avg at the 2x2, a 1.21 single at the magic, a 2:02.70 avg at the megaminx and 12.90 single at the clock are very good results !!
