cube issues

Now, I wasn't really sure where to put this, so this is as good as any.

I'm not necisarrily a beginner, as I can solve all cubes up to the 5x5x5 (albeit the 5 with a little luck).

anyway, I'm trying to get into improving my time on the standard 3x3x3, but I have an issue that I don't know is cube or user related.

When I try to turn sides sometimes they won't move right, i.e. get stuck a little. So is this my cube needing lubricant or me needing to get better at turning?

And how is it recommended to learn how to turn a face the right distance. Sometimes I'll overturn and waste time.

Thanks.

P.S. FWIW, I have a standard storebought cube. Brand name rubiks.

If you have a standard storebought cube, it would be the cube locking up (99%) - it isn't too much of your fault.
Many people recommend getting DIYs at a time of xx.xx, but I actually think, that one should buy a DIY, once he/she doesn't like his/her cube anymore.
As you said, you can't improve your times at the moment (btw, how fast are you?), so I'd recommend getting a DIY.
The cube itself won't lower your times that much, but it really helps a lot, if you like your cube (and its more fun!)

Good luck,

Alex

I'm around 1:20 to 1:30. Yeah, I know its pretty lame, but I haven't learned any better methods yet. I'm using the beginners method (one that the cube comes with) with some improvements I discovered, but I know its nothing good. I'm working on learning fridrich's. So that may help. But I just seem to fail at turning... oh well. This thing is so addicting.

EDIT: If I buy a new cube, what should I get, where from, etc.

My storebought is better than my DIY, but it does lock up from time to time. I am getting a white type c from DX, so I might switch to that one. My DIY now is a type A, and it really sucks. My store bought cube is easier to turn and cuts corners almost as good if not as good. I have gotten my best times, best record of 5 and best single non-lucky solves with it, my DIY I got a 17 second lucky solve, the store-bought 18 non lucky.

It most likely is your cube, but you should work on timing your turns and getting better at that cube so when you get a better one, you will be used to the lock ups and you won't get them with the better cube.

I let my friend borrow this cube for like 2 months and he pretty much broke it in for me without knowing it.

Get a type A. You can get them at almost any online cube shop (i.e. cube4you, Puzzleproz (on ebay), Deal Extreme, ect.), an they're good for beginners and for intermediate/expert cubers. I got a type A from puzzleproz for my first DIY, and I've used it ever since. It cuts corners (anything <45 degrees) and turns fast (with silicone spray), but it locks up a little (for me).

It's mostly a personal preference though, so get whatever you want from wherever you want.

I'll probably go with C.

Does it need lube? which is prefered, and stickerwise, are there any cool sticker sites with decent stickers?

I'd like a nonstandard color scheme.

For lubricant, I reccomend 2 things

1)Jig-a-loo, comes in a yellow can
2) CRC heavy duty silicone spray, comes in a red can

Etheir one is fine to use, just pop out 2 edges, spray 2 squirts in each, then work it in immediatly.

As for stickers, it comes disassebled so you can put on the stickers any way you want to. If you want stickers that will last awhile. www.cubesmith.com is the way to go.

EDIT: The C that you get,, after you assemble it, it will need lube to be at its fullest potential.
