Cube featured on Yahoo.com

It caused another wave of views/comments for my megaminx video, too. Here's a question: Even though it's quite clear my video is *not* played backwards (because the megaminx rolls away from me in the end) and I explicitly wrote that I had the official world record and linked to the corresponding WCA results page, many people still comment it's done played backwards. Why? Are people really that stupid? I don't understand.

Well, most people don't know anything about cubing. If you tell them the WR is 30 seconds they believe it. That's not a problem, but many of them are also arrogant and overweening, and when they see a video of a fast solve, they think the best way to show the world how clever they are is to say that the video is obviously fake. That's the problem.

Unfortunately, they are :/.

Stefan relax!
Well it's not like I'm terribly furious, so no real need to relax. I'm just really wondering how people are able to think it's fake despite all the obvious evidence that it's not. What annoyed me a lot more was a comment that said the megaminx is also called "Alexander's Star" which is clearly a different puzzle. Why do people speak up when they have no idea what they're talking about? Btw never reply to or delete the comments I get, most of the time I'm just amused by their ignorance, but at the same time I'm also bewildered by it.

When something doesn't seem possible, but it's done with a little practise, people start trying to find explanations. And most of them are so simple minded that they get to the conclution that it's fake.

When people think they know something that other people don't, they start to repeat it everywhere they go even though the fact is wrong!

But what about the "innocent until proven guilty" principle? It's ok if they think that something is fake, but how can they dare to publicly claim so without proof? I've called something fake, too, but only when I had good evidence and knowledge about the issue, and I provided that evidence.

Now that is a question I can't answer. But I think that IS because they're stupid or want people to think the same way they do.

I know what you mean - there were thousands of people posting on nakaji's video that it was fake and done backwards, but if they only clicked on his name and used their eyes for few seconds, they could see that he has plenty of other videos with times around 10 seconds. Plus, on the right, you can see all related videos, most of which are speedsolves too. It amuses me as well. I resorted to hoping that they are joking

That doesn't prove anything. All of Nakajima's videos could be faked.

Innocent until proven guilty is SUPPOSED TO BE the rule, but in reality, it is always the opposite.

anyway, I wouldn't worry about the criticisms.

Then click on his profile and follow the link to his speedcubing website and realize this is serious business. There's really no legitimate excuse.

Oh and I don't understand why people bother commenting on extremely popular videos at all. Yu's video now has over 14000 comments, do people think their comment makes any difference?

But what's dumbfounding me even more is people who submit "video responses" that have nothing to do with what they allegedly "respond" to.

Btw, I just realized this is the yahoo thread, not the youtube thread, sorry about my confusion.

He could have faked every single speedcubing site ever.

really there is no excuse for such comments

That might make sense if we're talking about videos, records, competition results etc. But on his website he explains solutions. So you look at it, and either you understand it (and realize his skill is real) or you don't (and realize you're not qualified to judge), and in neither case you're going to boldly claim it's all fake.

People in general are quite stupid, and make bad assumptions. Their comments are totally un-thought. That is just the way people are in general. They try cutting down people that are better than them at something "cool" to make themselves look better.

On another thought, who cares what they think? It doesn't matter at all.

I'm curious how people work.
Their comments are totally un-thought.
Yes, I think that's the core problem. People don't put enough time and effort into investigating stuff before judging it. I believe that, ironically, real "skeptics" wouldn't call Yu's video fake, because they'd either put sufficient effort into it to realize it's real, or decide they don't know enough about it and keep their mouth shut.

Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if the same same people who shout fake right away were the same who right away believe in stuff that I think doesn't have enough evidence to support it and is most likely not true, all the typical paranormal stuff for example. So these would be people who get things wrong both ways, calling real things fake and fake things real, for the same reason: Not enough information. I find this fascinating.
