Short Cubing Project Survey

You’ve been cubing since 1981???
Sort of. I was about 11 when I had my first cube - not much different to many on here. However there was probably a 20-25 year gap before going back to it now and again. The cube had its forgotten decades. It wasn't continuous. I still have my cuboctahedron and pyramid / minx from 80s. Had the barrel, barrel on a keyring, 3x3 ball, snake, whip it, clock, cube on a necklace. I joined the forum to get some shorter algs - now I've got them. My system has 11 algs and it's unique to me. I need to twist faster and reduce look time. I've played a lot of board game tournaments so cubing is something I go back to over the years.

🙂 🙃 🤩

1. About 1 1/2 Years
2. 12-13 Seconds
3. I think it prepared me to perform well in stressful situations (Example: 2 months after I started cubing, I had a performance at Carnegie Hall, and much more after). I also don't think my life would be the same if I had never started cubing, I have had so many experiences from it.

1. How long have you been cubing for?
2. What do you average (in comp or at home)?
3. How has cubing changed your life?
1: Since March of 2020

2: I average 10-11 seconds in comp (but worse at home 💀)

3: Cubing has been my greatest passion for a very long time. I have built my life out of this community and have made some of my closest friendships by it. I have learned that, with practice, I can become good at anything that I set my mind to. It has helped me manage my nerves in stressful situations. When I was trying to get an official sub-2 2x2 average, I was having massive nerves that would get in the way. I learned to control them with a lot of practice, and I eventually achieved my goal with a 1.54 PR average.

I do not know where I would be in my life without this hobby. It is what gives me joy in my life.

For one of my finals, I made a presentation on cubing and its benefits and I need a visual aid. I decided to create a survey with a few questions you can all answer. Just note that only the answers will be put into the presentation and everyone will remain anonymous

3 years but I quit a bit after the first year
25 sec
I’m never bored lol

Started nearly 5 years ago but have taken breaks so not continuous.
- mid high 10
- didn’t change my life drastically just a good way of passing the time really, especially during the pandemic. Not that deep really :p

1) 11 years, just over half my life
2) I average basically 10.1, I'm on the verge of a sub-10 Ao500
3) I wouldn't say it's changed my life hugely, it's just been a good hobby and a good fidget toy. I wrote one of my college essays about cubing so it might have played a role in getting me into my #1 choice school, but hard to say for sure.

3. How has cubing changed your life?
1. 3.5 years
2. Low 7
3. Comps are fun

1. 11 years
2. 10 seconds
3. It gave me confidence. A lot of people see cubing as a hard thing, so if I can excel at cubing I should be able to excel at anything I exert a similar amount of effort
