This is a post I made in the OAQT:
About a week ago, I was surfing though iTunes, and I stumbled upon a documentary about cubing. I'm sure some people are familiar with it, it is called Piece by Piece. It's fairly old(around 2006), and every one of the records, even some of the terminology, was outdated. Because of this, I started thinking about having a more recent documentary out, highlighting cubing on the East Coast, and opposed to the West Coast, which is what Piece by Piece does. Now, I am a 16 year old cuber from PA, averaging about 18-19 seconds, and I hardly know anyone in the community. I've met a few people(Rowe, Macky, Bob, Dan), but I'm the only competitive cuber in my area, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go through with this documentary. I wanted some people's opinions about it before I started a thread or anything. Also, seeing as I hardly know anyone, I would also like to ask if anyone living on the East Coast would like to help me with this project. It wouldn't be much work, I would be doing most of the editing and things like that, but I need raw footage from some competitions that I won't be able to attend. Feedback for this idea is much appreciated, thank you!

Only one person responded, and they didn't give much feedback, so I'm posting this here. Since posting this, I have stumbled upon a few more documentaries, but all of them date back past 2009.

Also: I don't want to seem like an attention w****. I just think this would benefit the community, to have an updated film on cubing. Tell me if you think it's a good idea, DEFINITELY tell me if it's a bad idea, give feedback. :)

Hahaha, that's a great question! I'll start working on that this week. I'll probably have a semi-detailed outline by the weekend, but I was thinking of including current world records(single and average/mean) for 2x2-7x7, 3BLD, and OH, and mentioning every other event. Also, including footage from the top cubers in the world, some footage from WC2011 and Nats 2011, interspersed with East Coast footage and interviews. I will include the history and evolution of cubing as a whole. Obviously not all in that order, though. :P

Probably the big four(CFOP, Roux, Petrus, and ZZ), but I don't think I'll go too in depth with them. Maybe I will with CFOP, since it's the most common, and most similar to LBL/beginner methods. And I'll probably include notable cubers and records like that in the history section.

Sounds like a lot of work and preparation, but I'd help if I could. I live in PA also, so I generally go to all the East Coast competitions. I think you should do the video in chronological order including old world records and videos from a few years ago building up to the current time.

Thanks, i'd appreciate the help! I remember seeing you at Bridgewater, I actually think I might have been talking to your dad at one point. xD I think that's a good idea, and I'll probably incorporate it into the outline. I'm thinking of only having a succession of 3x3 records, though, seeing as having other puzzles/events in a succession like that would take up a lot of time, and at the moment, I don't see the actual video being longer than 20 minutes.

I deifnitely think it's a great idea. But I don't think it should be all about competition and world records. I think it should be more about the cubing coomunity and the hobby/lifestyle as a whole.

Some stuff to touch on in the doc itself: (some of this has already been mentioned)
-modding puzzle/creating original puzzles
-Other twisty puzzles (skewb, pyraminx, curvy copter, etc.) There's probably thousands out there, I think it would be cool to talk about them.
-Solving the cube (different methods, and processes)
-breakdown of a competition (rules, contests, and just genereal goings-on at competitions)

And of course, the standard "What does cubing mean to you?", "How has cubing affected your life?" "When did you start cubing" etc. interviews.
