Jorian Meeuse's progression thread (Kinch WR230 ER70 NR4)

My biggest sub-5 fail yet:

R' B' U' L U R B D' R' U2 R2 D2 F2 U2 B R2 U2 L2 F2 U2 F2
I planned in inspection that y2 F L D R U' R' U L2 U2 L would solve a double x-cross. Then I started solving, and when I got to the U L2 U2 L part, I noticed that doing U2 L2 U L instead would make it a triple x-cross, but for some reason I didn't do it. I did U L2 U2 L as planned, and then did L' U2 L2 U L2 U L for the next pair. The fourth pair was y R U R' F R' F' R. Then OLL. I went into it as fast as I could, but while doing the alg (R U R' U' R' F R F') I realized that doing a U2 before the OLL would have given a skip. I didn't do that, unfortunately. The time was 6.79. Quick math with the TPS shows that that time is equivalent to a 4.52, had I actually done both these things and assuming the same TPS.

I'm so fed up with not getting a sub 5 lol

Thought I finally had my sub 5 by misrecognizing the 1LLL (thought it was gonna skip PLL, it was a J perm.
F R' L2 D2 L2 D R2 B2 D R2 D L2 U2 L2 F' U F D B' R2 F2
y // inspection
L2 U R Uw' R F' // X-cross
R U2 R2 U' R // this is how far I planne in inspection
L' U L R U2 R' // super lucky last two pairs
Now if you have had enough experience with PLL skips, you'll probably realize that this is extremely similar to the case where it skips here. But unfortunately, after doing the OLL (Rw U R' U R U2 Rw'), you're left with a J perm.

I got 6.06. Definitely would be sub 5 with a PLL skip.

I'm gonna get it soon, I promise!

U get soo many 6’s second Solves what is ur on mo3 and so5
No idea. But yeah I keep getting sub 7s and sub 8 ao5s. Pretty sure I don't have a sub 7 ao5 though.

Just got this sub 6 as well (it's an interesting solution and I planned 3 pairs)
U' D' F D R' U R U2 L2 B2 U2 F' U2 D2 B' U2 R2 U F'
y // inspection
U' L' U L // insert corner and make two pairs, idk how I saw that and the fact that the edge that goes with the corner stays solved
R' D' R D'U // finish xcross and setup 2nd pair
L U L' // 2nd pair
y' U' R' U R // 3rd pair, the last one that I planned
Huge hesitation (a bit exaggerated but yeah I paused)
U R U R' U2 R U' R'
And a normal LL
Time: 5.95

I love a nice full step sub 6.

Nice! How long did it take you to get to sub 10
This:
I was looking through my screenshots and on the 2nd of october 2021 my ao1000 was 9.98, so a little less than 2 years if you start counting from when I actually started practicing
Kinda sad that I have only improved 1 second since then (maybe a little more, I'm getting more and more 8.5 averages)
and
what did you do to get to that point?
Learn stuff and practice that stuff lol

I put on my profile a while back:
'In June or July I'm planning on grinding ZBLL because my final exams will be over then and I'll have a lot of spare time. I'll probably dedicate like 3 weeks to learning and 2 weeks to revising everything, I expect that to be enough.'

That's not happening lol, I don't have that much time to spare. I'll try to do it like this. Today I'll start, and each day except saturdays and sundays I'll learn a set of ZBLLs, most of which consist of 12 algs. Each day in which I learn algs I'll also revise the algs I learnt in that specific week. On saturdays I'll revise everything I learnt up until that point, not only from that week. There will be 2 weeks in which I can't learn any algs, so for 40 sets that means it'll take 10 weeks to learn full ZBLL.

When you learn algorithms, do you just do them over and over until you memorize them, or is there a more efficient way to learn them?

Jorian’s probably learned many many times more algorithms than I have, but generally I split algorithms up into familiar triggers and sequences. R U R’ U’, R U R’ U, R U R’ F’, etc. are all triggers super super common in LL and even F2L algorithms. The more you algs you learn, the more these triggers become familiar, which thus makes it easier to learn.

Depends on the type of alg.
1. Algs that are 'intuitive', in the sense that it's just F2L pairs moving around. For these it's not so much the alg that's hard, but the recognition since for ZBLL there are so many different cases. I can learn these by simply reading the alg once or twice, but that means I don't get to see the case it applies to very often.
2. Algs that are just magic and somehow don't mess up the F2L. For these I memorize them with muscle memory. This means I have to do the alg many many times and it takes a while before I am confident at these. 2 advantages: you get to see the case very often which makes recognition easy, and when you get it in a solve you can do the alg at top speed because you don't have to think. In the lucky scrambles thread I posted a solve with a ZBLL, but that ZBLL took over 3 seconds because it belonged in category 1, meaning recog was hard (not very hard for this specific case) and I didn't have very good muscle memory meaning I had to think during the execution of the alg.

Did 3 ZBLL sets instead of 2 today and yesterday combined because a lot of the algs were algs I had learnt already relatively recently so I still knew a few cases. I now know the 2GLL cases for T, U and Pi. Next are the rest of the Pi cases because I used to know all of them like a year ago.
I'm not entirely sure yet if I'll learn all sune and antisune cases, but I will simply assume I will.

Current progress: 36/472

New phone new session, after 27 solves I already had 3 6s.
A few cool recons of x-crosses I did (maybe use them as example solves if you're trying to improve your xcrosses because I think they're quite good)

F2 U2 L' U2 L D2 L U2 F2 L' R' D2 F D L2 D' U R F2 L B2
y2 Rw' U Rw D R2 U' R2 U' R' D

F' D2 L2 B' D2 R2 B' D2 B U2 F2 R' U R' F2 D L F2 D2 B'
y' z2 R D R2 L2 U' L' D2 y' U' L U2 L' U' L U L' R U2 R'
Could've been sub 5 if I had recognized the ELL which I didn't for some reason. 3rd time ELL ruins a sub 5 lol

U' D2 F U' R L B U2 R2 D B2 D' B2 D2 F2 D B2 D L2 F'
y' U L R' B' R F' R U R' D2
Didn't see the xxxcross by inserting the blue-orange edge, but that was fine now because from here I did U L U2 L' U y' L' U' L U2 R U' R' y' U' R' U R U' R' F R U R' U' F' U R so quite lucky

D' L2 U2 L2 R2 F2 U' F2 D' U' F L' B2 U' L' F D' L R' F2
y2 x' R U R' U' x U'D' L F2 R' D' R U R' D L' U' L U2 L' U L U' L' U2 L U2
Didn't plan the whole thing in inspection obviously but I also messed up during the solve so this ended up not even being the solution I did. Would have been an incredible time lol
