I have gotten into a practice routine of 2x2 and 3x3 (mainly 3x3) and I was wondering your opinions on which event I should start practicing more regularly. I only practiced 2x2 and 3x3 for awhile because I just wanted some time to focus on getting atleast the basics before I really started getting faster at any other events. I was leaning more towards pyraminx, megaminx, and/or 4x4 but I think I will just take it a few cubes at a time. I want to get faster at 2-3 more events because I want to start competing sometime in the summer or fall, and I want to compete with more than just 2x2 and 3x3.

Sometime very soon I will get a new megaminx (YJ Yuhu) and my main pyraminx is the Yuxin Black Kirin Pyraminx (it's great for a 6 dollar cube and has worked very well for me, but I also appreciate recommendations if you guys have any). My 4x4 is a MoFang JiaoShi Meilong 4x4 (magnetic). It's great for its price ($10), but it is not perfect. My skewb is a Yuxin Little Magic Skewb. I haven't tried OH at all and I am wondering of a small cube that works great for the event (preferably 50 mm, but I know nothing about OH).

Again, I would appreciate any opinions on which events you all think I should start grinding (and of recommendations for the cubes listed above, if you believe I would benefit from a different model). I have a basic understanding of all of them (except OH) and I will improve at each and every one of them eventually, but as I said, as a beginner I want to take it easy and grind a few cubes at a time, until I have a stronger understanding/stable practice routine.

Thanks!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeegggggggaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!

let's see

mega is fun but it's basically a longer 3x3 f2l with a weird and longer last layer

4x4 has more steps than 3x3 or mega: center solving, edge pairing, 3x3 step and then parity fixes
my pb with 4x4 is 1:56 but for me it is loads of fun and I only know reduction at the moment but even though it's so satisfying passing trough all the steps and there is sooo much room for improvement. people are solving it under 20 seconds so there is so much to do until you reach a plateau

if you like 2x2 I would say pyraminx will get you busy for a long time too
I don't do pyra, I don't even have one myself but I gave my mom a jelly pyraminx and I solve it from time to time with intuition and basic cube theory, but there is a lot of depth, various methods, algs, fingertricks to learn and I think if you decide to do something shorter than 4x4 or mega, pyra would be a good choice because there is a lot to learn too

I love solving skewb casually with beginner method, but for me, advancing in it is just learning algs and weird fingertricks and it's kinda frustrating sometimes. I can't solve it faster than 15 seconds and I kinda gave up. advanced algs look so scary too...

for 3x3 oh it's so satisfying and cool, but I get strong pain in my hand when I solve so I don't practice it anymore. but It's cool to show to your friends

I would recommend 4x4, specifically with yau method
or just do pyra if you prefer, is shorter and maybe you can improve faster

I hope this helps someway =P

Thanks! I will consider all of this.

Wrong, mega is a puzzle similar to 3x3 but can be solved differently. The idea that mega is 3x3 with extended F2L is a widespread misconception. It's more like 3x3 on steroids.
Yeah but look at top solvers. They all use f2l and loads of ll algs

Kinda true, but they do other techniques for F2L that are advanced compared to 3x3. Nothing really regarding pseudo but pairing in 7 moves for EVERY block. Also, an F2L pair counts as block-building. And as for LL, people don't have to use dozens of algs. Also, it's edges then corners for 4lll, not corners then edges.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I have a question for those of you who do OH, how long did it take you to become comfortable with turning the cube with one hand?
like a week

To answer the title, Mega, 4x4, and OH do depend a bit on 3x3 speed, so if you aren't that fast at 3x3, try 2x2, skewb, pyraminx, and square-1

easiest event to get good at: CLOCK

Yeah, that makes sense. I enjoy doing 2x2, and I just started improving at pyraminx (11-12 avg). I also find megaminx very fun so I might get into that as well. I also think 4x4 is fun.

Whatever event you find most fun. I personally enjoy 4x4 a lot, though right now I am working on 3x3 to get faster at 4x4 and 5x5.
