Hi,

I startet cubing in 2010 with the age of 16 and dropped it for university in 2014. You all know what cubing era that was.
Now I'm a teacher and did a cubing related project with my students. It was so much fun I picked it up again (around July)

I need to say that im impressed by how much cubing changed.
  • ZBLL is much more common, algorithm sets in genereal seem to be more optimized.
  • Cubing hardware! I got a Moyu WR M 2021 MagLev and a new 4x4x4 and 5x5x5
  • speedcubedb is nice also
  • Tymon, Max, Matty, Leo...world records...
  • 4x4?! sub 1 6x6??! What. I think cubing hardware is important here.
  • The quality of YouTube content also improved
  • Much more registered WCA competitiors, 3000 people officially sub10. Cubing seems to keep booming.

I have the impression cubing changed alot during the corona pandemic. You can see a transition from low 4s being special to becoming normal for top cubers.
I'm just sad that I don't have as much practice time as with 16. I'll try what I can accomplish nevertheless.

Happy Sunday!

Welcome to the forum. I got the impression that during the covid lockdowns, not only did a lot of new people (including myself) start cubing, but the top cubers (Max, Tymon, Ruihang, etc.) had a lot more time to practice.

Yes but the competitor growth mostly happened pre pandemic. There are now about 157000 competitors registered

There are about 171730 competitors at ten competitors per page.

Wow, thank you for the in depth insight into the development of cubing in the past years.
I would agree that more people mainly Tymon Feliks and maybe Leo have been using it but it’s honestly not groundbreaking. Algs now are often longer and have more wide/ slice turns. This is especially true for OLL.
That's interesting! Since I need to relearn a good chunk of OLL I will make sure to look into new algs. Also I realized I need to switch some of my standard algs cause they are bad.

You as a teacher surely know that those still in school didn't particularly follow all the distance learning rules they should have(that's not me dunking on schoolchildren, that's just being honest).
So there was a lot of time to cube now.

Although by the end of the weekend there will probably be more like 172500 competitors.
